What do I watch with a nearly 13yo who doesn’t like anything???

Just as the title says. We are having a movie night. DS likes nothing atm - he is a grumpy teenager who communicates more through grunts than actual words. I suspect he’s in it just for the snacks anyway.

He doesn’t like (brace yourselves for the list)

  • Christmas movies (for girls, apparently!!!)
  • Star Wars/ lord of the rings vibe (seen many times)
  • anything too scary (as if I would ever let him watch a proper horror film!)
  • anything at all.

Every suggestion from me has been a NO!!!
He likes football, all sports in general, planes and travelling. He liked Jurrasic Park films, Sully: mirace on the Hudson, Men in Black - just a few examples for inspiration..

I’m feeling lost for ideas, any suggestions welcome! We have Disney+, Prime, Netflix, Sky, Paramount, Apple and pretty much any other streaming service (I know, I know, waste of money).

How about Fifth Element, I think that's on Apple and/or Prime. You might have to pay for it, though.

Bavariamaria · 20/11/2025 13:03

Independence Day
National Treasure
The Glass onion films
TV shows, the office, ghosts

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 20/11/2025 13:06

You go for something so bad you can laugh about it.

The Core
National Treasure is good for that.
Armageddon
Con Air
The Rock.

So basically mindless rubbish you can make fun of. Over the top, bad acting - bring it on.

Whenindoubthugitout · 20/11/2025 13:07

Ferris bueller
the goonies
the princess bride - coz it’s about a boy who also thinks it’s uncool

Fuckitydoodah · 20/11/2025 13:12

Has he seen the most recent mission impossible or Indiana Jones films? My 13yr old DS enjoyed those.

He also enjoyed Gladiator and World War Z, but they are 15 age rating. I knew he'd be OK with them.

Not a film, but I've recently got him into the old xfiles seasons. He's really enjoying them.

Onefortheroad25 · 20/11/2025 13:13

My 12 year old doesn’t like much either but he does watch all the Harry Potter movies over & over. He also found Wonder on Netflix last summer and watched it about 10 times!

MrsSkylerWhite · 20/11/2025 13:13

Goodnight, Mister Tom

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 20/11/2025 13:13

What about the 2005 version of War of the worlds?

Mum2Fergus · 20/11/2025 13:15

Just cancel the movie night 🙄

Needmorelego · 20/11/2025 13:17

I am curious.....if he's not interested why do it?
But if you really insist how about a Studio Ghibli film?
Spirited Away and Howls Moving Castle are both excellent.

This post made me think of Sharknado

Fuckitydoodah · 20/11/2025 13:18

Was coming back to say War of the Worlds

Also, The Edge of Tomorrow, which also has Tom Cruise in it.

Tiswa · 20/11/2025 13:18

rbe78 · 20/11/2025 13:18

Not a film, but ours loved Good Omens at that age (still do actually, it's a family fave).

Ghostbusters

Robocop

OhDear111 · 20/11/2025 13:20

If he’s not keen on films, why have a film night? Watch Blackadder or Fawlty Towers instead!

Baboutheocelot · 20/11/2025 13:20

Hunt for the Wilderpeople is fantastic.

It’s not compulsory to like films, or watching films with your parents.

The most successful film we ever watched was The Martian when ds was 12.

Player One was pretty good, was that a 12?

Agree re The Rock or Con Air depending on the certificate, can’t remember what they are.

Watch your favourites too. I sat through Wagners Ring Cycle with my mum at that age. You have more influence than you know. I still don’t like Wagner 😂 but I did get into opera.
