No, not some stupid monster/slasher to whip up fears for nonexistent problems. This is something completely real to scare you.

I just went to see the new Orwell: 2+2=5. And it’s great. I’d like to imagine that everyone here has read 1984, and that’s the jumping-off point for this. It begins with some background on George Orwell. He describes himself as lower upper-class, and opted for government service in Burma in his 20s, which many Brits in his situation did, where they could lord it over the native-born population while living lives of comparative luxury. But instead of the classic identification-with-the-aggressor, he ended up with a keen horror of oppression of all kinds. And he returned to England and became a writer.

It's sort of Anglo-American international. It starts with focusing on England, then moves on to mention various totalitarian regimes, past and present, in Europe and Asia, then moves on to the U.S., zooming in on Trump's authoritarian leanings. It covers a lot of ground (the Spanish civil war, Nazi Germany, the Russian invasion of Ukraine) and is just amazingly crammed with information.

Unlike most documentaries today, it’s rather a purist documentary, not depending on re-enactments, nor filming talking-heads interviews, nor narration. The bulk of it is Orwell’s own words (intercut with his own life), and existing archival footage. You don’t need any knowledge of Orwell, or anything else, to appreciate it, but if you’re well-informed, you’ll see familiar faces, familiar words (“Freedom Is Slavery”)—and some familiar movie clips. And, partly because the film also quotes from his letters, it often feels as if Orwell is speaking directly to you.

Really excellent documentary, likely an Oscar nominee.
