Not what I was expecting.

I’d happened to see bits of trailers and had the impression it was a romantic comedy. Nope, not by any traditional standards. It’s a romance, but very little humor, and what there is of it is bitter or cynical. Overall, it’s just another movie of a woman (Dakota Johnson), a professional matchmaker, as it happens, thinking she has the opportunity for the wealthy man of her dreams (Pedro Pascal), but still drawn back to an earlier love, or at least an earlier boyfriend (Chris Evans). In effect, it's a choice between money for love. In other words, not so very different from a 1940s idea.

Despite the critical praise, I didn’t think it was particularly interesting. The writer-director Celine Song evinces no intellect, no sense of humor, no meticulousness of detail. As a matter of fact, at the very end, there’s a brief scene that dissolves into New York improbability, as the heroine Dakota Johnson leaves her boyfriend sitting out overnight on the stoop instead of in the lobby. There’s no sense of the main characters having larger lives, not even friends. When the heroine has no place to stay for a week or two (having briefly sublet her apartment, which a New Yorker would never do for such a short time), she hasn’t a single friend or colleague to call.

Visually it’s surprisingly unattractive. Even Pascal’s supposedly ideal lavish $20 million home is dull and sterile, as if the director has no clue how to signal an interesting, engaged, cultured person.

The only interesting element is that it bluntly confronts not just the stereotype of men demanding younger women, but women’s emphasis on men’s money – and height. The one remarkable moment points out the difference in female reaction to a men’s height, with the man crouching to illustrate the difference of a mere six inches, between 5’6” and 6’. It’s pretty damn startling and drives home the point.

I recently read a review that said it was lacking in energy. I hadn’t thought of that, but it’s exactly right.

I really wanted to like it, given the leads and how they’ve looked when they’ve been interviewed together.

I found it all quite bleak, as it was putting facts and figures to the value that anyone had in a relationship. I know that was the point, but it just didn’t land 100% for me.

LividSquidward · 13/08/2025 18:16

All I was thinking was she was bonkers to turn down all that bloody money.

xsquared · 15/08/2025 22:32

I watched it this evening with a friend, without seeing the trailer or reading up on what it was about.

Plot and characters are thin, amd it never really picked up in pace. I did smile a when Lucy told Patricia what she thought of her boyfriend criteria though.

The other thing I noticed was, how much Chris Evans and Dakota Johnson actually look like siblings. In fact, Chris Evans and Don Johnson played father and son in another film!

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 16/08/2025 15:11

I thought this was poor, lacking in chemistry and not particularly believable either

rookiemere · 16/08/2025 20:59

I saw it a few weeks ago as an unlimited member. I liked the concept of it, but it quickly lost steam. I agree with the comments above, it seemed a bit bland and the bit I didn’t understand was how the couple were going to overcome irreconcilable differences this time round.

Same here. I expected to like it, I wanted to like it ... but it was just kind of empty.

"Thin" is the perfect word.

I loved it and thought it was very much like an indie film even though it probably wasn’t. I like how the film via Johnson’s character treated meeting a partner in a cynical and mathematical way and how it actually pointed to love being more about the number in someone’s bank balance. I liked how they also touched upon the darker side of dating. I thought Dakota Johnson and Chris Evans really played things right and gave subtle performances. Definitely not a rom com!

I didn't like it. I didn't understand why Dakota Johnson made the relationship decisions she did.

Ok, don't choose money, but perhaps it's better to be alone than with a man with zero ambition and zero savings who talks about wanting children. Who's going to pay for those kids? (especially in the USA where everything is more expensive). Obviously her, meaning she'll have to go back to work asap after giving birth. I just don't think it's a sensible choice to make.

Then there's also the sexual assault plotline. The film was billed as a romantic comedy, making the addition jarring. I also thought - who is this aimed at? The mainly female audience will already be well aware of the real-world dangers when dating. I for one was going to the cinema for a bit of harmless escapism, not to ponder the misogynistic violence endemic in our society.

I could understand the decisions - but I still didn't like it. Like you, I was expecting something very different.

Funny, recently in another woman's forum, one poster was holding forth on what boiled down to a recommendation to marry for money.

I saw this with a friend on Saturday night. It was deeply unsatisfying. Chris Evan’s character was implausible and a complete sap. Pedro Pascal’s was boring and equally implausible. Wish I’d gone to see Freakier Friday even though I can’t stand JLC anymore.

I wouldn't say marry for money, but do marry with some practicality in mind. Choosing someone hardworking is a good start.

Chris Evan's character was clearly shown as unhappy with his living conditions and I was originally sympathetic. But then at the end when he gives that speech to Dakota Johnson he says he'll change (unlikely, people rarely do), he'll pick up more shifts (meaning he hasn't been working full hours before now?) and will get an actual agent and apply for a wider variety of acting roles (meaning he's hasn't been trying very hard before now?).

I dunno, it sounds like red flags to me. A man in his 30s who's fed up with his life but not actually working hard to improve things... I would be very doubtful that his promises to change would amount to much.

So yeah, if I were her I'd be worried that I'd be left doing all the cleaning and cooking, funding everything, working full time with young children while my DP hung around waiting for acting jobs to fall into his lap.

You expressed this well. The Chris Evans character just seemed like a waste of space. Strange in this day and age that she didn’t go for the obvious option of staying by herself and/or waiting for a more matched life partner.

DramaLlamacchiato · 25/08/2025 23:06

It wasn’t what I was expecting either

I really didn’t get the point of it if I’m honest.

The Sophie story was so unsatisfactorily resolved

The characters were one dimensional

And Dakota Johnson is a truly awful actress

TheaBrandt1 · 25/08/2025 23:09

I thought it was good not amazing but worth seeing.

I was surprised and disappointed at her decision. They had split up for a good reason which was still an issue. Had an ex I kept going back to and should have stuck with my correct decision the first time I dumped him. So found that unsettling.

TheaBrandt1 · 25/08/2025 23:12

Also he was 37 not a young man with time to turn it round. Pushing 40 and still living like that.

Felt like she was being masochistic and weirdly self sabotaging - resigning from her job and marrying a waiter? I mean I agree gold digging is wrong but she was doing the exact opposite (lead digging?!)

Lead-digging! Lol.

As to Dakota Johnson - a pretty face and famous parents can go a long way in boosting your career.

I honestly haven’t seen Dakota Johnson in many things but what I have seen she’s been nothing special

xsquared · 06/09/2025 14:38

Dakota Johnson is Holywood royalty with her grandma being Hitchcock blonde Tippi Hedren as well as Don Johnson and Melanie as her parents.

To be fair, she's not the first and won't be the last with actor parents, who may have or not influenced her career decision.

Nobody says the same about Michael Douglas or Keifer Sutherland do they?

That aside, I have only seen her in trailers or small snippets of films on social media video reels. She sounds and acts the same in what I've seen of her.

Well, to my mind, I wouldn't use the word "royalty," as I don't consider any of her three ancestors to be that great.

@MsAmerica I'm using the term "Hollywood Royalty" to mean she is from a multi generational family of actors.

Epli · 18/09/2025 15:50

I also did not like the movie. I thought the second half of it was very badly written, with very cliche dialogues. I think there were some interesting bits e.g. how women also look at superficial things like height or balding, or how dating is fun for men but can turn really dangerous for women, but it also regurgitated a lot of tropes like successful women (by a standard of a 'normal person') going for a broke guy that is going nowhere and leaving her previous job on the verge of huge promotion or the supposed 'unicorn' not going for 25 year old but 30 year old instead when being 50 himself (actual Pedro Pascal's age, not sure what it was supposed to be in the movie though but could not be much lower).

Also it does not help that Dakota Johnson's acting skills are absolutely abysmal, she has no chemistry with any of her love interest.

My personal highlight of the movie was Lucy's bag which I am now obsessed with.

stayathomer · 18/09/2025 15:53

I had thought it was meant to be a rom com! I’d say go read a Beth O Leary, Sophie White or Sophie Kinsella instead!!
