Seriously, don’t. I’m mildly furious about the £13.50 (Senior ticket) I wasted on this yesterday.

Firstly, I don’t do horror. The premise was intriguing though, and from the reviews I thought it would be an interesting story with a tiny, bearable bit of horror. How wrong I was.

Secondly, the direction was frankly mad. Absolutely no control over tone at all, spookiness where none was needed, (unintentional) hilarity at the points where it ought to have been terrifying.

It was terrible. I want my money back. Angry

Weapons review – Zach Cregger’s slick Barbarian follow-up is a bumpy ride

The in-demand writer-director’s initially ambitious yet ultimately simplistic ensemble horror offers jolting moments but lacks substance

Why would you see a horror film if you don't 'do' horror?
Which bits did you think were 'unintentionally' hilarious out of interest?

I agree with Kermode's review on this!

Faineante · 11/08/2025 08:53

This one? (NB This review is a bit more spoiler-y than The Guardian’s!)

https://sfcrowsnest.info/weapons-mark-kermodes-horror-movie-review-video/

I agree with his comment that It doesn’t all work!

I went because ‘Sinners’ toughened me up, and I thought it might be that sort of interesting.

It wasn’t. It turned into the sort of horror I avoid. (Maybe my fault because I try not to read much reveiwing beforehand … 😅)

Weapons: Mark Kermode's horror movie review (video). - SFcrowsnest

So, then, Weapons, my little horror movie. Mark Kermode is here to discover what a lovely, twisted, unhinged little thing you are.

Yes this one - though I only watched his review rather than read it! Yes it didn't all work, and actually felt a little long for me.

SPOILER ALERT
I think I'd have preferred a clever metaphor - like Kermode says about the gun/shooting than the witchy bit. I thought maybe the aunt was punishing the other school kids for bullying Alex, but didn't seem that way. Seemed random.
I didn't think it was tonally all over the place though - I thought the hilarious bits (like the aunt running at the end) were intentional.

Rollergirl11 · 12/08/2025 14:12

I loved it! Enough to gloss over the glaring plot holes. Agree that the hilarious bits were intentional. I just read an article saying originally Gladys had her own chapter giving her back story but they did away with it.

Faineante · 12/08/2025 14:24

I suppose it was the randomness that flummoxed me! No news of strange goings on anywhere else …

YABU.

Though the whole thing was riddled with police incompetence, and could have been resolved by them doing the most basic of jobs…

So did I - I thought the performances and direction were great, the creepy bits were nicely creepy and the funny bits were very funny (I also enjoyed Barbarian, which was similarly silly). I agree it didn't all quite hang together, but I saw it in IMAX and I think that made up for it.

I liked the way the story was told from multiple perspectives and I also thought it was like one of the better Stephen King adaptations, despite being nothing to do with Stephen King. The soundtrack was a cracker too.

Faineante · 13/08/2025 11:57

Speaking as someone who’s never dared to even pick up a Stephen King novel - it probably wasn’t my best choice of film. 😂

Watched it last night and while it wasn’t what I expected (although I’m not actually sure what I expected) I bloody loved it. It was absolutely nuts and I can’t stop googling all the hidden meanings and Easter eggs today. I NEED to speak to people about it 😁

SPOILER ISH

Gladys was fabulous. Funny but frightening as fuck. I loved the Pied Piper vibe. Also a touch of Mother Gothel too.

The druggie was hilarious 😆

The last horror I watched was 28 Years and having loved and re watched the previous two many times I was soooo disappointed (actually in many horrors of recent years) so this film was just the ticket to get me back on the horror train.

The new Jordan Peele one looks interesting so keeping an eye out for that.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 14/08/2025 09:39

Oh and I jumped and screamed embarrassingly at every jump scare much to my DDs shame!

Rollergirl11 · 14/08/2025 09:51

Same here @tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz with 28 Years being last horror film watched. But I wasn’t disappointed thankfully, as 28 days is one of my fave films of all time.

I enjoyed Weapons immensely. I loved Babarian so knew it had potential. But was previously dissatisfied with Longlegs, which was the last film that was massively hyped up in the same way.

I think Together looks good also and that’s released this weekend so may go and watch in the coming weeks.

Faineante · 14/08/2025 10:50

I did a fair bit of jumping and muffled screaming.😂 And I was on my own in a row of couples seats, so it was somehow doubly embarrassing.

New Jordan Peele? Just googled. Hurrah! Venerate his talent and vision - and Nope is one of my all time favourite films. (Showed me a world I’d never seen before on film.) But I can’t quite contemplate ‘Us’ …

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 14/08/2025 11:27

Oooh now I loved Us. One of my favourite horrors ever. Again very bloody funny in places too.

GRCP · 14/08/2025 11:31

I absolutely loved it!!

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 14/08/2025 11:40

I may need to watch it again 😁

Perimama · 17/08/2025 07:30

Disagree OP. Loved Weapons - was so entertaining, funny and shocking. A great movie to watch with a crowd!

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 17/08/2025 23:44

I wasn't sure what to expect but actually really enjoyed it! Bit bonkers and a bit all over the place but that's what I liked

Spoiler..ish..maybe
That scene reminded me of Matilda with the Trunchbull

Usernamenotavailable19 · 18/08/2025 11:27

I’m going to see this on my own at some point

Pepperedpickles · 18/08/2025 11:45

We saw this yesterday. I was a bit disappointed as I thought it was going to be about the descent into mental illness and seeing things that weren’t actually there etc rather than some supernatural / witchy type thing. I felt that spoilt it for me. There’s a trend in recent horror films (longlegs, the Monkey etc) for this sort of black magic stuff and it’s just not for me. I miss the days of things like Silence of the Lambs etc where it was scarier because it “could” be true.

Faineante · 18/08/2025 12:40

Actually, yes - I think that may have been part of my disappointment too, @Pepperedpickles.

(Though I know myself well enough never to have attempted more than about three minutes of Silence of the Lambs.)

When the reviews suggested a really intriguing resolution to the mystery … I dunno - I expected to be intrigued!

Snoopysimaginaryfriend · 18/08/2025 18:31

I loved Weapons but I love all horror.

i don’t think she was his great aunt. It reminded me of a book I read when I was young called ‘Grinny’ by Nicholas Fisk which again was about a ‘great aunt’ that no one can remember turning up, ‘you remember don’t you?’. Very creepy.

YanTanTetheraPetheraBumfitt · 27/08/2025 17:23

I want to see this but I don't do scary horror so not sure it's for me. I can't watch stuff like Scream but I love slightly spooky weird stuff.
