I thought I’d start a separate thread so we can discuss the film.

So what do people make of the ending with Jimmy? I know lots of people found it really jarring but I personally loved it. It was a LOL
moment for me. I saw one poster on Reddit saying that the colourful tracksuits were a reference to the Teletubbies clip, which I thought was interesting.

I was surprised by the ending, but loved it nonetheless. It was jarring and a bit of a headspin after what was a very intense roller-coaster, but hilarious. I needed that laugh after crying about Isla.

Especially after thinking that Spike's dad was the kid from the beginning for the entire movie 😅

The sound design though! My goodness that was brilliant!

SocksAndTheCity · 22/06/2025 10:02

Yeah, why have two threads when you can have three?

I liked the start and I liked the ending, but I found the whole thing really uninvolving although I loved Ralph Fiennes' character. The accents grated on me, and whilst I liked that the infected were kept pretty peripheral in the whole scheme of things, I didn't care about any of the main characters and the island community gave me the creeps.

When the Swedish soldier arrived and made it clear that the rest of world was just ticking along as normal and had left the UK to get on with it, I'd have liked to have seen more about that which we'll maybe get with the remaining films. I can see it was good, but I possibly just wasn't in the mood (and the endless references to 'zombies' in the reviews is already pissing me off).

Rollergirl11 · 22/06/2025 10:17

I liked the lighthearted way they brought up current day beauty aesthetics.

What do people think about the pregnant infected girl? Are we thinking she was pregnant when she got infected or that the infected have evolved to be able to procreate? I got the distinct impression that the big Alpha was the newborns father. Kelson did say something about them breeding but I can’t remember exactly what…

I assume Jimmy isn't a nice person, but then again he had an aura of Jimmy Saville about him. Was he meant to?

I read that as well which makes sense! And the power rangers toy was shown as well.
Didn't realise to start was the same boy from start. Makes sense once read it. And the Jimmy Saville ness the whole infections and that happened before everything about him came out so again makes sense why dressed like him..ish.

Found this one quite heart felt! I dont expect the next part to be...

Gettingbysomehow · 22/06/2025 14:58

I think they were some kind of a cult that had developed from the old world. The acrobatics were quite something.

Needhelp101 · 22/06/2025 17:39

I could have sworn that Sampson, the big Alpha, was Jason Momoa 😁

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 22/06/2025 18:02

I hated the ending. Hated it. The first half hour was amazing, real edge of your seat stuff and I loved the way the old footage clips were woven in. Good character introductions too. I liked seeing what it could be like being completely cut off from the world. So much potential for a great film.

Then it just got daft and a bit tired really. Even the Alpha stopped being really scary and just got a bit captain caveman. And the ending. Just WTF? If I want comedy with my infected I’ll watch Shaun of the Dead as that’s the benchmark for me. It just felt like we were being smacked around the head with a set up for the next two.

Beautiful scenery though, such a gorgeous part of the world.

I thought that too! Actually saw this on another thread and I piss myself every time I see it so shall pass it on …

@tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz 😂

I did enjoy it but was equally irritated by a lot of it. Random horrible Swedish soldier was a bit wtf. He had about 10 minutes screen time for seemingly no purpose.

Sad to catch a brief glimpse of the Sycamore Gap tree in its former glory.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 22/06/2025 18:24

Ahhh that was sad, agree.

Actually I did enjoy a few other moments too, Spike and his mum was really well done. And I loved the odd skull doctor too, the trailers had lead me to think he’d (in this film at least) be a threat but not the case. I am interested to find out more about him which I guess will come in the next ones. Which I’ll definitely watch while moaning it’s spoilt the first one for me likes right old gimmer 😂

Needhelp101 · 22/06/2025 18:41

I really liked Rafe Fiennes character too. Calm and gentle.

Rollergirl11 · 22/06/2025 18:42

I think the purpose of his character was to let the audience know that the rest of the world has carried on as normal.

I absolutely loved it, walked out smiling
Danny Boyles unique style came through again
Jodie comer acted brilliantly as usual.
The little lad was great, and loved the different ideas instead of just more of the same from previous films.
One of my favourite bits was seeing the pregnant infected woman snap out of it while she was giving birth, humanity and the desire to get her baby out was stronger than the infection for those few moments.

That's a good point.

Tootingbec · 22/06/2025 19:46

I was so disappointed by the film. Thought it was a mess of different themes, genres, moods.

Like @tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscozI was gripped in the first 30 mins but then it just seemed to become a jumbled nothing. There were loads of glimpses of odd and creepy things in the Holy Island community (very Wicker Man vibes) that were never explored and unusually for me I stared to get logical about stuff like “why doesn’t the rest of the world do air drops of food and supplies - they would easily be able to see the people on the island were not infected and needed help?” I am normally very good at suspending belief so this is a sign I wasn’t that invested

Apparently there are two more films (one already made) in the pipeline so maybe this was just the set up…

Same thought he was going to turn out sinister but them not the case. Worried what happen to him in the next film though dont think things will be as lovely!

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 22/06/2025 20:06

I was wondering how he’s kept himself safe considering his bonfire was like a bloody beacon! I’m quite sure a strong current in the river wouldn’t see the infected off as some are bound to still get across? Loved that brief glimpse of him in his deck chair as if he was having a littler refreshment break after a hard mornings gardening 😁

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 22/06/2025 20:11

It’s weird … I keep thinking of lots of things about it I liked but my overall feel was it felt like a mish mash at times. I wonder if it’s the Trilogy thing? So rather than one excellent film that can stand alone it has to be dragged out? 28 days was so fresh and original and those scenes of an empty London foreshadowing Covid streets were incredible.

JustPinkFinch · 22/06/2025 20:19

Loved it also! Quirky, exciting, weird, scary (in parts), silly in others. I thought the ending of Isla was topical and poignant. Loved it was set in the NE. The Jimmy ending was definitely very WTF but it meant I left with a smile. Can't wait for the next one.

Buiderswoe · 22/06/2025 20:42

Loved it. Watched the two originals in the week running up to it so they were still fresh in my mind. Brilliant cast. Could totally see how Holy Island could protect itself in that way. The

Teletubbies sequence at the start was pretty unnerving…I could imagine it having made its way north up the country getting closer and just having to watch on helpless.

loved the Jimmy Saville reference at the end. I guess Jimmy was a wee kid who would have watched Jimll fix it and thought it was great. The whole Saville scandal didn’t break until years after the Rage virus was unleashed in the UK so it would make sense that he might still be an idol for wee kids.

Fiennes and Comer played their parts beautifully and Spike was totally convincing in the 12 year old who loved and wanted to protect his mum. I loved the scene where the fat slug one was creeping up on them while they were sleeping and she battered him to death while Spike slept through it!

The birth scene I loved even though it did seem entirely unlikely. I wonder if that baby will have antibodies that will help with a cure (bit similar to 28 weeks later storyline).

I think Danny Boyle was just allowed to go wild and I love the film all the more for that. Can’t wait for the next one…not have to wait until Jan..whoohoo!

He mentioned that he had discovered iodine was a deterrent for the infected.

Ahh of course he did 😁

Disturbia81 · 22/06/2025 21:44

Yes loved Ralph
So macabre yet beautiful how one minute spike is hugging his mum and the next he’s holding her skull.

Owt · 23/06/2025 18:09

It was meant to be a group of Jimmy Saville enthusiasts. The world never got to find out about his crimes because of the virus. He died and remained a hero and a national treasure.
