Anyone planning to go and watch this? And did you read the book? I am hoping to go in the next couple of weeks. There are four of us going, two have read it and two haven't. Looking forward to the scenery as much as the story.

Apparently some booksellers have been restocking the book under "Fiction" or even, "True Crime". This amused me.

I think they are denying it.

Of course they are…

Well, now we know that much of this story was total bullshit, so well one those who thought both book and film were dodgy. The authors a couple of arrogant grifters who duped so many and made millions out of it.

I hated the book too! She wasn't just self-serving - it read like she was confabulating the whole way through - from the frankly bullshit story about the dodgy investment to the "we're not like typical homeless people" (who is??!) wide-eyed schtick. Pretty sure even Gillian Anderson couldn't save it for me and I'm annoyed that she's been sucked into thinking it's a worthwhile project.

The film didn't make much sense.

Most people if confronted with financial difficulties would do the sensible thing and try to find work. Given that they were prepared to travel (evidenced by the ridiculous 630 mile walk, or so they claim), they could have just relocated to another area to start again. Raynor Winn was 51 so still 16 years away from retirement age.(I was made redundant during Covid at 53 and still managed to find low paid work before getting back on my feet). Secondly, if your life partner was recently diagnosed with a degenerative disease, would you risk their health further by dragging off on a 630 mile walk and rough camping holiday?

In the film, Moth spends most of the time groaning at every movement and dragging his leg and you can help wondering why they are doing it. Some of the scenes in the film are a tad ridiculous. I kind of expected to see Gillian Anderson rolling around in a bed of nettles or trying to get stung by a bee so she could act out the drama with faux heroism. I couldn't help feeling that it all felt contrived. Also watching an almost 2hr film on a middle aged couple on a walking holiday isn't the most exciting plot premise.

3/10 for cinematic scenery.
