Jan 17th sees the new film og Bob Dylans early rise, from playing folk clubs in Greenwich Village, to when he 'went electric' and peed off his folk fans. It us launched in the US on Christmas Day, and the reports from pre views are very positive. Timothee Chamalet plays Dylan, so it may expose a whole new raft of his younger fans to the music of Dylan. Tim has sung all the songs, and very good he is too. It takes a few liberties with the truth, but looks like a good biopic, and something to look forward to.

I’m looking forward to it so much, got my ticket booked already!

EachandEveryone · 29/12/2024 14:17

Oh I want to book it but my local is an Everyman so I have to wait. It’s had rave reviews. Looking forward to it.

realsavagelike · 05/01/2025 04:44

Live in Canada, so already seen it and loved it. Highly recommended.

Lincslady53 · 16/01/2025 22:27

Just on my way home after seeing a preview. Well worth the wait. Excellent performances from all. Brilliant sound too. A real insight into the Greenwich Village scene in the early 60s.

Really good film. Timmy is fab.

Nitgel · 17/01/2025 23:11

Who knows what the real bob is like though.😄

westisbest1982 · 17/01/2025 23:26

Much too long and a bit boring, I found. Acting was alright, nothing special.

Milly4321 · 18/01/2025 14:56

Saw it yesterday with my mum, who was a big Dylan fan in the 60s. We both enjoyed it - she found it very nostalgic, reminding her of the boyfriend she had at the time! Thought Timothy Chalamet was excellent, and the guy playing Pete Seeger. The actress playing Dylan’s girlfriend, Suzy, was a bit weak I thought. The storyline tended to concentrate on the managers, rather than on Dylan himself.

Going tomorrow morning

"The guy playing Pete Seeger"- is that how Edward Norton is referred to nowadays? Where were you when they were hiring writers for The Roast of Bruce Willis 🤣

I have no great interest in Dylan and until this film, didn't particularly rate Timothee Chamalet, so was surprised by how gripping I found this.

Chamalet did a wonderful transition from fresh faced to jaded and I absolutely loved Edward Nortons performance as the heart of the film.

Less convinced by the girlfriend, I guess there wasn't much to draw on.

I also wondered how often he changed his sheets for both the girlfriend and Baez to actually be prepared to have sex there, as they captured the shabby untidiness of a grotty flat really well.

I would recommend it even if you aren't a Dylan fan.

Fleetheart · 20/01/2025 18:53

I agree. I really enjoyed it, it felt very authentic and I’m not at all a Dylan fan (maybe more now), but I found it quite compelling and a great portrait of the early 60s.

longtompot · 21/01/2025 23:19

Saw it yesterday and really enjoyed it, but am wondering if the cinema I saw it in and a sound issue as no one else here is mentioning it. I could just hear what TC was saying but sometimes I completly lost the thread. My poor dad, who has hearing issues couldn't follow the story at all and just enjoyed the songs. He's a big Bob Dylan fan.
Edward Norton was excellent. Wasn't so sure about the guy who played Johnny Cash

UrsulaBelle · 24/01/2025 21:44

Watched it tonight. I thought is was very well done. No whitewashing of what a dick he could be and Timothee Chalamet was really good. Bob Dylan was/is such an icon and Timothee was very convincing. And he did all the singing! The dialogue was hard to make out at times though.

Took me longer than I’d like to admit to recognise Edward Norton. I still picture him as being the age he was in Fight Club.

realsavagelike · 25/01/2025 01:53

Re. the dialogue being hard to make out - I think that's just classic Dylan! Went to one of his concerts a few years ago and could barely make out which song was which...

Freysimo · 02/02/2025 17:06

I saw it yesterday, solo, as DH not a fan. I absolutely loved it and hope it gets Oscar for best picture. Timothee Chalamet really caught the essence of Dylan, although he's better looking! Ed Norton was great too. I saw Dylan perform in Liverpool in 1965 so it brought back many happy memories.

PermanentTemporary · 05/02/2025 22:34

Saw it this afternoon, absolutely great time. Loved Edward Norton's performance. Held my breath every time Chalamet took his sunnies off and cried at Don't Think Twice it's All Right. Would have liked a bit more depth to Sylvie.

colouringindoors · 08/02/2025 23:09

Not that into Dylan but wanted to see - really glad I did. Brilliant recreation of 60s culture. I thought Chalamet was amazing - totally had Dylan's music, voice and posture. Interesting te musicology - folk, music of protest and Dylan's move to electric. Recommended.

Lincslady53 · 18/02/2025 18:35

Sylvie was actually Suze Rotola, Dylan insisted her name was changed for her privacy. The second time I saw it, I noticed a few details, particularly Sylvie/Suze's sister not being impressed with Dylan, and a few eye roll/ sideways glances. Dylan wrote a scathing song about the sister, Ballad in Plain D, which he later said he regretted writing.

Same.

No particular great drama happening. I did like Ed Norton (as always) but the lack of drama made it quite dull.

Admittedly I only saw it to say I'd see all the best picture nominees. And I had no idea about his life so if he had died in an accident at the end I'd not have been surprised. But we didn't really see much about his life either -all he said was a lie one assumes. Maybe just one for the fans.,

SnowFrogJelly · 28/02/2025 17:13

Loved this film

upinaballoon · 07/03/2025 08:57

Rarely made out what he was saying (didn't much matter) but I loved the songs and the feeling of it all.

Luddite26 · 25/05/2025 21:11

A bit late posting but I have finally had chance to see it today
Blink and I missed it at the cinema.
Absolutely loved it. Not a massive fan like a few songs but my dad chose Mr Tambourine Man at his funeral so I had been intending watching it.
Absolutely love Timothee.

As pp said we had a giggle at Jonny Cash - should have got Joaquin Phoenix to play Cash.
Sad at the end. Sad thinking about Woody Guthrie in hospital all those years and others who had to live like that. Bonus points to Bob Dylan for continuing his visits.
Really loved the whole film but it seemed to be quite long and it hasn't really uncovered much about the man himself could say he's still pretty unknown to me so going to have to do some reading and then watch it again. Definitely worth a second watch.
