I've run out of ideas and need help to spruce up my list

These are my criteria

  1. I don't really like 'girls nite in' films - e.g. In Her Shoes, Steel Magnolias etc
  2. I am possibly the only person in Britain that doesn't think 'The Shawshank Redemption' is a work of genius
  3. Really like Judd Apatow stuff
  4. Recent faves include: Eastern Promises, Control, United 93, Snakes on a Plane, This is England, Dead Man's Shoes, The Quiet American,
  5. TV stuff I like: The Thick of It, House, Family Guy, the US Office

So what else from the last 2-3 years might float my boat?

Have you seen the Bourne trilogy? I'm not a big one for thrillers, but they were fairly entertaining.
Then again, if you've run through all your Lovefilm list, i guess you probably have seen them!

I subscribed for about a year, gave up when I looked at my list, and realised I didn't really care that much about watching the films that were left on it...

Don't lovefilm themselves have some sort of "if you liked X try Y" thing? I forget now.

Oh, American Dad! Tis from the Family Guy people, and indeed very similar.. but still fun.

A box set of 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' might appeal?

The Wire, if you haven't already seen it.

You're on the right tracks, I really liked Bourne 1 & 3 and already own all of Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Now, 'The Wire', lots of people I respect rate it, but tried a couple of episodes and just can't get into it - worth persevering? What's the secret?

oh and Lovefilm's recommendation thingy is not a patch on Amazon's - basically consists of its new releases

It is really worth persevering with The Wire - so many people I know said exactly that, that they couldn't get into the first few episodes, then a month later they were raving to me about it and saying how glad they were that they'd stuck with it It's almost a real-time unfolding of things, and there aren't any short cuts into characters or situations so you do have to pay attention - but the rewards are many. I would say the experience is more like reading a really excellent novel than just watching telly, with the same level of investment and repayment of energy.
