Too long and too much sentimentality. .

I enjoyed it, although there was some dodgy child acting (not from the boy playing George, who was great) and I agree it was a bit long. It reminded me of when there were proper children's films that weren't just Marvel or Transformers, and I thought the practical effects and sets were really well done.

Admittedly I know the area well, and I suppose it would have a bit less novelty for people who didn't. Paul Weller was very good too.

@SocksAndTheCity The casting by and large was great and it was good that the film tackled racism, I just didn’t see the point in having big names in when it would have worked just as well with emerging names.

Saoirse accent is excellent I thought

DH and I saw it yesterday and thought it was great. We didn’t find it overly long. Some scenes were ‘borrowed’ from Dickens.
I’m going to watch it again on Apple TV as there was so much detail in it. A couple of jumpy moments as well.

I saw Blitz today and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was very moving and had real impact on the big screen. I did expect a grown George at the end which didn't happen and I thought the 'relationship' with the firefighter was left in the air. Yes, there were gaps such as the leap from underwater rescue to a nice comfy bed and the untold story of the two munitions girls. I loved Kathy Burke's performance and Saoirse was excellent as ever.

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 21/11/2024 19:30

Messy, cliche-ridden, predictable, preachy. And Kathy Burke and Stephen Graham were completely wasted as cartoon villains. Cinematography and costumes were great but otherwise we were really disappointed.

It's on Apple TV now

I didn't really get the point of the whole film TBH. Some of the acting was wooden with the 'cor blimey govner' accents, but Londoners generally seemed to come off as dodgy.

How did he end up in that bed if the woman was going to take him to the police all along? If George was nine, then presumably his mum met his dad in 1931, would there have been jazz clubs like that then?

unlikelywitch · 30/11/2024 18:58

I got as far as the scene where Rita hugs the little girl who lost her mum and switched off. Can’t remember the last time I was this disappointed in a film!

I didn’t find Saoirse Ronan believable which shocked me as she’s such a phenomenal talent. The young actor who played George was wonderful, though. The dialogue was sparse and stilted, with some of the most wooden acting I’ve ever seen. I also thought much of the hair and make up left a lot to be desired. Would women be wearing 2 inch thick makeup with a red lip to go to work in a munitions factory? Most importantly, there was absolutely no subtlety or nuance; “we’re not commies, what we’re doing is actually Christianity” then some lazy cliché about Jesus being a communist. These things can be conveyed much more cleverly, and understood by the audience without the need to spoon feed them or bash them over the head. It felt utterly clumsy and dumbed down and just very GCSE Drama. I’m completely baffled by the rave reviews online.

I loved this film, Epic to see at the Cinema. The water scene by the gates was like Titanic lol
Anytime I see a 12 A, I know its going to be more mainstream which is ok sometimes.
Plus I read it was through the boys eyes so was prepared.
