💤💤💤💤😴😴 really disappointed in this and couldn’t wait for it to be over.

I was too! I normally enjoy his films but found this one awful and clunky - the dialogue was dreadful! Maybe a result of the language “barrier” but surely one of the many native English speakers involved could have piped up and had a word! I thought it looked beautiful though, very nice cinematography 😎

@Strumpetpumpet I have coat envy when it comes to Julianne Moore’s green check coat. The cinematography was great I agree. I didn’t like TS playing the daughter at all.

Agree. Loved the cinematography and the costumes. Clunky dialogue and storyline. I was alone in the cinema but actually laughed out loud when TS appeared onscreen as the daughter. Shame, because I usually love Almodóvar.

Agree. I was plotting an early exit for much of the film. The woods were nice though.

Whoever cut the trailer is very skilled as the trailer makes it like a totally different film from what it actually is. I was so glad when she died which is not how I wanted to feel but when she died I knew the end was near .

Just seen this and came on to see if anyone thought the same as me. Glad to see you do!

So much exposition, that whole explanation, for example, of why she wasn't close with her daughter, and who Michelle's father was - completely unnatural and unbelievable.

I did quite enjoy the end, but like someone else said, maybe that's because I knew it was coming close.

Did get a good giggle though. Someone next to me opened a bottle of fizzy juice (I'm Scottish, yes, it's juice) and I heard the 'pshht' noise, just as the guy commented on how much carbon dioxide we are releasing... 😆

Oh, and a note on the casting of Michelle - there was a woman at the book signing right at the start, I was convinced she was going to be Michelle as she really had a look of Tilda Swinton. They missed a trick there! Rather than casting Tilda and trying to make her look younger.

That's because when you watch his Spanish films you don't realise his language is the same. Almodovar never cares about naturalism or realism. He's the melodrama king, loves artifice and does not write like people talk.

Strumpetpumpet · 03/12/2024 22:54

I had no idea! I don’t speak a word of Spanish! Thanks for the explanation x

So are the people creating the subtitles changing the dialogue as they go? Seems unlikely.

I haven't seen every film he has done, but I've never seen any film with as much poorly executed exposition as this one has.
