I went to the cinema by myself to watch this yesterday. Such a stunning film but also a very hard watch about addiction. I would highly recommend it. The Orkneys are stunning on it.

I am 6.5 years sober (although not through the AA or any other programme) and the film absolutely floored me. I cried a lot and then cried all the way home.

I've read the book and it didn't effect me so deeply.

I now can't stop reading about the film.

I plan to see it, thanks for starting a thread about this.

culturevulture1984 · 29/09/2024 14:34

Yes, planning to see this, delighted there's a thread.

The book was great.

WhatWouldHopperDo · 29/09/2024 15:08

I’ve just got back from seeing it and loved it. I loved the book and one of my proudest life moments was when Amy Liptrot commented on my IG post about how much I enjoyed it!

@libertineagain that is an amazing achievement. I imagine this film was hard hitting. Be kind to yourself.

Britpopbaby · 29/09/2024 16:17

I’ve just come from seeing it and thought it was fantastic. I hope SR gets nominated and wins many awards.

Lostthetastefordahlias · 29/09/2024 16:23

Ooh I am going on Tuesday and cannot wait. The book is stunning.

Glad you enjoyed it. I listened to the audio book, and her second book too, but not seen the film yet.

(Just in case any Orcadians decide to read this and jump on you, I'll point out in a friendly way that we refer to 'Orkney' or 'The Orkney Islands' and not 'The Orkneys' - I've witnessed many a poor poster ripped apart on FB groups for innocently saying 'The Orkneys'.
🫣😔😵‍💫)

Aquarius1234 · 29/09/2024 23:17

I also went last minute to see this as I really like the main actor.
Getting used to going to the cinema alone 🎥
Who needs film buddies lol

mibbelucieachwell · 29/09/2024 23:43

I read the book and watched the film and loved them both.

I felt the main character's alcoholism was a more pronounced feature of the film than the book . I loved the way Orkney wasn't romanticised or made to look twee and that the archaeology and quaint parts of Stromness weren't allowed to dominate.

I'm an Orcadian ( native of Orkney) and found the experience of seeing my childhood homeland and fellow Orcadians on a big screen was very powerful. The acting was fantastic and it was one of the most intensely moving films I've ever watched.

I gave it 9/10.

mibbelucieachwell · 29/09/2024 23:48

@libertineagain Well done on your recovery from alcoholism. I admire your strength and wish you all the best.

I found the scenes of her being drunk and out of control, especially when she was with her mum very moving. And then having to start at day zero again. I too was absolutely sobbing.

theleafandnotthetree · 30/09/2024 22:47

Just back from seeing it and found it very moving and inspiring in a way, how we must predominantly rely on ourselves to lift ourselves - and sometimes save ourselves - but that we can also rely on the kindness of others and the beauty and power of nature to provide footholds to hoist ourselves up. Saoirse Ronan is just incredible in it. Funny, as an Irish person she sounded more Irish than Scottish at times but it almost didn't matter and in any case, I think we have remarkable similarities in culture, outlook and sensibility.

Sandwichgen · 01/10/2024 00:16

I found it very powerful to start with, but a bit slow at the end

the seals were v v cute

cariadlet · 01/10/2024 00:25

I'd read mixed reviews of the film so am glad that I found this thread.

I read the book for my book club and found it very powerful. It sounds as though the film has done it justice. I'll have to see if it's being shown near me.

JennaRink · 01/10/2024 01:32

I loved it as someone who knows Orkney very well! They actually used amateur extras from the island. My Orcadian friend knew some of them.

My friend met Saoirse and the cast in the pub one night during filming.

libertineagain · 03/10/2024 18:09

Over a week later, I am still thinking about it. I have reread the book in the meantime which hasn't effected me in the same way. I think it's the visuals of the film.

Just in from watching it , went with a friend who's husband died of f alcoholism and that found it very moving . I'm Irish and really really loved it. Similar vibes to Ireland but wilder , bleaker and more beautiful

Nitgel · 04/10/2024 09:57

lovely film, nice seals. Our cinema put the lights on right at the end 1 minute before the titles, spoiling the end somewhat.

westisbest1982 · 04/10/2024 23:51

Saw it tonight and loved it. I found it a very affecting depiction of addiction and Saoirse Ronan was, as usual, fabulous. I'd also urge anyone to see it on the big screen before it comes out to stream in a few months' time - I thought the cinematography was superb.

BrandyandGinger · 05/10/2024 21:34

I'm going to see it tomorrow. I watched Atonement recently with my DD. Saoirse Ronan was amazing in that. It's a strong cast but she outshines them all and it was one of her first big roles.

Debtfreeme · 05/10/2024 22:29

Really enjoyed this

Agree it should be seen on the big screen. Found it less harrowing than I expected, but still is an appropriate description on addiction and how it affects social and personal relationships.

Mary46 · 17/10/2024 17:47

Lovely film the island is beautiful. Love her films.

CarrotSeeds · 18/10/2024 09:53

I saw this yesterday at the cinema and thought it was very good. Saoirse was amazing of course, such a talented actor, and the scenery stunning. I thought the chaos of Rona’s London life was portrayed so well, I felt sick and anxious watching her in the scenes where she got totally wasted. And the scenes with her mum were so moving and felt very real.

LushLemonTart · 20/03/2025 19:05

Just watched on Netflix. Absolutely amazing.
Saoirse is a fantastic actress. The amateurs on Orkney did a great job too.
I think the depiction of an alcoholic was pretty well presented. I've known a few including close family members. Most have come to being that way because of their childhood, trauma or both.
It's such a moving film. I haven't read the book.

MarchHare339 · 20/03/2025 19:08

I read the book when it came out and loved it. This film was fantastic. I thought it was a beautiful moving film which stayed in my head for days.
