Just got through watching Firebrand. I happened upon it not knowing anything about it, so I had zero expectation which is always better, I find. If it was historically incorrect I couldn't care less, and that ending may have actually happened, what do we know.?I'd like to think it did. The amazing thing for me was that I didn't know Jude Law was in it, and I didn't recognize him at all. It was such a shock to find out that's who Henry was. A tour de force for Jude, indeed. Did he become obese? Hard to believe that was his bum! I thought I didn't know any of the actors which I found refreshing, because one becomes bored with the same old faces and harder to seperate them from the roles their playing. There were a couple of people I recognized but their roles were small so it didn't matter. I'm glad I didn't know it was Jude Law.

I’ve seen it as I had friends involved with music and costumes so I rushed to the cinema as soon as I could!

As a re-creation of a world it was absolutely terrific. Best costumes, hair, props, ever. I would watch it again and again just to enjoy the beauty.
Acting was great, some really good performances not least Jude Law. He had a butt double apparently! Imagine having that on your cv. Loved Anne Askew, Gardiner, and the brilliant young Elizabeth.

Historically I am afraid the story goes very much off the rails. What happened at the end couldn’t possibly have happened because Katherine wasn’t with Henry at the end of his life. Different palaces iirc. Gardiner did scheme to get her arrested but it wasn’t successful, she wasn’t chucked in a cell. And her pregnancy is extremely unlikely because we would have to believe that no gossip about it ever got recorded, and in the film the king knows about it. I can believe in an early pregnancy that never goes beyond her and her ladies but not one the court knows about but somehow none of the ambassadors ever mentions.

Not that I think there is anything wrong with people making films that change history, I just thought the statement at the start implying it might have happened was a bit dishonest: this was a story that changed known events, not one that filled in the gaps.

I loved it too for the costumes and atmosphere. I think it portrayed normality very well, how people interacted on a day to day basis. I get very annoyed when the French hoods are woeful but these were wonderful, as was the black work on the shirts. Historically way off but I'll probably watch it again. I loved spotting the costumes lifted from portraits as well.

I'm extremely keen to see this. Sadly it doesn't seem to be showing anywhere locally to me. The trailer was impressive, excellent costumes and scenery, and the period is fascinating to me. Impressive cast too - the actress playing Anne Askew was very good as Princess Anne in The Crown.

Zippea · 20/09/2024 15:09

I want to see it but there’s no showings near me

vincettenoir · 28/09/2024 22:19

I really liked this. Jude Law was fantastic and gross and the best scenes were the ones of him and Catherine together, like the dinner scene where he was flirting with the young lady in waiting.

I was not on board with the ending. Not just because it was historically inaccurate but it didn’t make much sense to me in the context of the film.

But I still thought it had a lot going for it and I fancy reading the book.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 01/10/2024 05:13

I’ve been looking for this ever since it was released but it must have a very narrow distribution as I haven’t found it showing anywhere near me. I saw it was on Amazon Prime but I certainly can’t see it anywhere on there.

piscofrisco · 01/10/2024 06:31

I finally saw it two weeks ago at the small cinema in our local arts centre (I was the only one on there which was odd but nice). I enjoyed it and I thought Jude law was good-unrecognisable actually.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 03/10/2024 01:06

Hooray! Two special showings at my local Everyman next week. I have booked my armchair.

PotatoWafflerWrites · 03/10/2024 01:41

Jude Law was amazing, like a pp, I also didn't recognise him, and was amazed to see his name on the credits at the end. Extraordinary performance. Brilliant recreation of a totally toxic and claustrophobic atmosphere as Henry VIII's court might have been. I loved it overall, though it certainly wasn't a barrel of laughs... Enjoy!

Sandwichgen · 09/10/2024 11:33

I really enjoyed it. Historically inaccurate of course, but I think it represented really well the sheer suffocation of Katherine Parr’s life at court, walking a tightrope every time she saw Henry so as not to upset him (his bar being very low) , and in the sights of the non-Protestant faction

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 09/10/2024 15:13

I’m off to see it this evening.

Sandwichgen · 10/10/2024 22:51

????

REP22 · 11/10/2024 14:08

Yayy! Just found out my local Everyman is showing this in a limited run. Ticket booked for tomorrow 🙂
