I liked it much more than the first film and thought the film tackled the complex issue of growing up really well.

I went with ds and absolutely loved it. On one level a nice, fun family film but also lots of other messages.

What do you think the "big secret" that was not ready to come out yet was supposed to be?

Smartiepants79 · 16/06/2024 23:09

If you sat through the credits they revealed the big secret. It wasn’t that exciting.
I did love the film. It’s so cleverly done and with 2 early puberty girls in my house it’s very relatable.
Would recommend.

MissMelanieH · 17/06/2024 06:49

Did they??
We sat through most of them but missed that bit...I quite liked it being left to interpretation though 😆

EllieQ · 17/06/2024 07:35

Oh, we didn’t stay for the credits! What was the big secret @Smartiepants79 ?

Needmorelego · 17/06/2024 08:22

Ok the big secret.....

Riley was the one who burned the hole in the rug 😂
"Is that it?" said Joy.
I liked Nostalgia - "I'll be waiting down here until you need me".

Maybe I'll have to watch again.
But I found the first so depressing.
And the second one is too I hear.

KaraSeat · 17/06/2024 16:52

I went with my 3 teens and husband and we all thought it was lovely ☺️

EllieQ · 17/06/2024 17:51

Thank you @Needmorelego 😊

I didn't find it depressing at all, but then I didn't find the first one depressing.
The take away from both I think?? is that all feelings are a normal, even the less pleasant ones. We need a balance of good and bad to be a fully rounded person.

Why's that depressing?

Mind you, I did cry in a couple of parts leading to my 12 year old hissing furiously "mum this is a kids film!!"

Flyhigher · 18/06/2024 22:50

The 12 year old getting depressed I found hard to watch. And it looked like sadness was always waiting there and could come back at any time.

I always thought that was the whole point? Like we can’t always be truly be happy and that sadness could just be lurking around the corner because life is full of ups and downs? Plus, it’s to show humans have complex emotions and that’s precisely why Joy has blue hair because there’s no such thing as pure joy. Well, that’s how I interpreted it anyway Easter Smile

Flyhigher · 19/06/2024 20:50

Yes! That's what I found depressing!

Flyhigher · 19/06/2024 20:51

Looked like depression to me, rather than sadness. Did not enjoy seeing it in film. Sorry!

Smartiepants79 · 19/06/2024 22:57

Neither of these films are depressing. Or showing Riley being depressed. They show her going through a normal range of human emotions at complicated times in her life.
A huge move and a loss of friends and identity.
The change into puberty.
But they both finish on very positive notes and show that these difficult patches will pass into new opportunities and growth.
I think Inside Out very cleverly helps children understand that life is complex. Emotions can change and grow. That sometimes we’re sad or worried but that’s normal and it will pass.
All children feel these things, pretending they don’t exist and that everyone should just be joyful all the time is doing them a disservice.
A lot of the subtext will have been lost on younger children anyway.

Depressing? Why?

I agree. Sadness is a normal human emotion. I’m a mental health profession and I didn’t see depression. We all feel it sometimes. No one will go through life without sadness coming along at some point. We will all experience grief for example. It’s universal.

We went today and loved it! DD14 cried... I think it resonated hugely with her

Emmylou22 · 24/06/2024 19:57

Absolutely loved it. I had tears rolling down my cheeks at the anxiety attack. So real and powerful. The dread in Anxiety's eyes is something I'm familiar with. I found it so well written and animated.

mrsnjw · 14/07/2024 13:55

Just seen this with my 15 year old dd. It's quite a powerful movie and the way they felt with anxiety was impressive. I loved joy saying she's using her imagination and turning it bad. Loved the chair for anxiety at the end. Sit in the chair that hasn't actually happened has it anxiety? Let's sit and clam down relax!
