Haven't seen anything at the cinema for years, and never have time to look round Blockbusters properly.

Good comedies, dramas, and especially psychological thrillers are our favourites.

Not really into fantasy/sci fi or action thrillers and not keen on romantic comedy.

Saw Mr Brooks (good) and Michael Clayton (confusing) recently on DVD. Really loved Sixth Sense (a while ago).

Any suggestions?

Top of my head are :
Blood Diamond
Pride and Prejudice
Brokeback Mountain

Foreign movies :
Pan's Labyrinth
The Lives of Others

Thanks, but is Pan's Labyrinth a fantasy-type movie?

haven't seen blood diamond but love leonardo di caprio-the aviator and catch me if you can are both fantastic.

pan's labyrinth is amazing. i usually hate anything even vaguelly fantasy or sci fi. the best way to describe it is an adult fairytale. really imaginative and beautiful.

volver (2006) with penelope cruz was excellent. and i adore wuthering heights, the one with laurence olivier.

and little miss sunshine made me laugh and cry, very enjoyable.

Ha Ha, that made me laugh Posie, as DH and I have an ongoing joke about The Shawshank Redemption. He will crack up when I tell him you recommended it.

We ended up with about 3 copies of the video at one time because DH kept forgetting we had seen it already. Now, everytime we see a copy of it in a supermarket or somewhere he turns to me and says "Have you seen The Shawshank Redemption"?

Why don't your rent off an Internet DVD rental service? That way you can browse the catalogue at your convenience.

Pages · 29/03/2008 19:38

Ah, thanks, Otherside, didn't know about this service. How does it work?

PS Thanks for all the suggestions. I used to watch Barry Norman in the old days before I had kids and fell asleep at 9 pm...

Well I'm in France but I am sure that there are similar sites in the UK. Amazon maybe? On the sites we have used you choose your subscription level, eg 2 DVDs a month, or 4 or 8 a month, and then you create a list of films you'd like to see in preference order. Each month, you get sent the top 2 or 4 or 8 in your list (subject to availability, you might get the first and third for example because the second is in high demand). When you've watched them you return them in a pre-paid envelope and then they send you more.

I've just googled online DVD rental and lots of sites turn up, including Blockbuster.
It works well for us because we would have to drive 30 mins to a DVD rental shop and the choice wouldn't be as good as online.

How about:
Atonement (saw it t'other day & loved it)
Don't Say a Word (Michael Douglas & Sean Bean - sort of pyschological thriller) as is A Perfect Murder (Michael Douglas & Gwyneth Paltrow)
Brokeback Mountain
Crash (recent one not weird car accident one)
Have you tried films by M. Night whatshis name - Signs, The Village, Sixth Sense?

slayerette · 29/03/2008 20:09

And The Gift - Cate Blanchett and Keanu Reeves. Also the Oceans films are undemanding entertainment - good eye candy!

oregonianabroad · 29/03/2008 20:17

take a look at the love film website.

Othersideofthechannel · 29/03/2008 20:27

Fine thanks, although really must go to bed soon as short on sleep. And you?

collision · 29/03/2008 20:30

Dont buy them.

Tesco do DVD rental. You choose what you would like to watch and they send them to you and you return it when you have watched it with free p+p!

It is great if you can use it. We did it for ages but then we got SKY and it wasnt worth it really.

oregonianabroad · 29/03/2008 20:38

I'm well.

Sleep tight!

Back to OP, we use love film (link above) and it's great. I got it when I was on maternity leave before ds1 was born, but it has been our entertainment for 3 years now. You can also rent complete series on it, so if you can't face a full film, a 30 min comedy or an hour long drama should do it (we've watched all of six feet under and the sopranos this way).

they also give you vouchers for friends at Xmas, which makes a neat but free gift!

Overall, very good value and excellent service.

Serenity - sci-fi spin-off from tv show. Sharp dialogue and the fab Chiwetel Ejiofor playing the villain.

Little Miss Sunshine
Hot Fuzz
Look Both Ways
Idiocracy
Children of Men
