What a brilliant film. Think the director of Pans Labyrinth was involved. Its Spanish and I watched it with NO SUBTITLES thinking how far will I get before giving up. Ended up forgetting I was listening to another language I was so caught up. Its one of those creepy ones that works for what you dont see and the build up superb. BTW I cried buckets at the end and went a bit mental with having to look at pics of my kids to remind myself they were fine (yeah well I did have some wine!)
I'm now waiting patiently for my English subtitles version which will be interesting to find out if I missed the mark anywhere.
If you like suspense with a dark fairytale then you must see this.

can't wait to see both..you seen the others?

newshmoo · 27/03/2008 11:15

Yes, the one with Nicole Kidman? I did enjoy that quite clever and reminded me a bit of Hammer House stuff especially the Housekeepers. The main part in The Orphanage is the female role. I dont know the actresses name but she was outstanding. The whole story conveyed to me and my thick noodle without it feeling obvious. My husband had to actually 'talk me down' from this film afterwards!

It was great, but so sad.

I can never stop recommending 'time of the gyspsies' by emir kusturika. It is hard to find but so worth it, probably my favourite film ever. It is about child trafficking in Eastern Europe, and has the most amazing soundtrack ever.

Hi
I went to see the Orphange at a baby and parent screening and my ds woke up and started crying at a really crucial bit so I kind of lost the thread at bit - saw when she persuaded her hubby to leave her in the house for a couple of days on her own - saw her find her son and then next thing I know her hubby is putting flowers on her grave ....can you fill me in on what I missed - god it was scary

newshmoo · 29/03/2008 00:40

Basically when she finds her son in the basement she realises how it all happened, how the day he vanished during the party, she looked in the cupboard under the stairs and lots of heavy metal poles toppled out which she shoved back in, they wedged the hidden door firmly shut.....then when she was hearing strange faint thumping noises during the night, which I thought were the spirits of all the orphans..this was her son trying to get out.....well she picks him up and takes him into the old bedroom with all those little beds in and she takes an overdose whilst rocking him in her arms.....then she looks up and into his eyes and hes alive again. And all the orphans are in there beds as she tells hime a story, its like they finally have the mother figure they all need. I guess you saw the ending with her husband and how he is making some sort of contact. I cried for ages afterwards but THIS IS GOOD, find it hard to cry normally.

I am interested in watching the orphanage, but have to totally disagree about the others - it was so predictable.

We went to see it this week and I loved it. A proper ghost story, atmospheric and suspenseful. I didn't find it that moving because I was so tense, waiting for the next scary moment! On reflection it was moving and a great story. I also loved pan's labyrinth and the devils backbone, which were deeper and political. The Orphanage is just a great ghost story.

Oh thanks newshmoo - now I get it!

sylvev · 31/03/2008 09:48

Out on dvd at the end of April, on Amazon site .

newshmoo · 04/04/2008 21:36

Will be ordering as cant seem to find a version with subtitles, same goes for the Devils Backbone. Guess i could always try watching without again but am thinkin this one is a bit more complex plotwise. Oh well amazon are pretty good these days, might do me a deal on the 2

Such a good film, as well as pan's labyrinth, can't wait to see devil's backbone. Would keep the tissues handy for both though.
