Do you actually watch the Oscars?

Do you actually watch the Academy Awards? Either live - since they brag about how its being seen across the world - or watch it online afterward? In its entirety?

In American forums, most people shrug that they don't watch. (But I do.)

If you do watch the whole thing, do you mostly like it? (I don't.)

Yes over the last few years dd, ds and I stay up and watch live. Ds writes about film and tv for work. Dd tends to know who everyone is.

A few years ago an American actress friend used to invite me round for Oscar brunch (on replay) and we'd try to predict the winners.

We all stay up too late in this house anyway. But it took me a long time to go to sleep after the year of the slap. Was so shocking and we couldn't believe it wasn't a stunt/gag for ages.

The Oscar's at Union Station in 2021 were very memorable and I found quite moving.

Oh and do I like it? Yes I find it fascinating. Sometimes it goes on too long and the hosts (if they have one) not getting laughs is majorly cringe.

Yeah I do but then I live on the East Coast of America and it’s starting at 6:30pm this year so no reason not to.

I like films and make a point of seeing all the best film nominees at the pictures and notable ones which have been nominated in other categories. I like to see what people are wearing and who has been given the worst advice by their stylist.

I know it’s all political and is not overly indicative of what’s actually good but I still find it interesting. It’s not that deep a thing.

No I find all the fawning and wealth quite nauseating personally. Meanwhile kids are starving to death, people are living on the breadline and they are patting each other on the back. They are not brain surgeons or Nobel winning scientists. They are actors ffs!

^^ this. I feel like watching the Oscars was something we did a couple decades ago collectively but there's been a shift.

Some years I do. It depends who's nominated, whether I've seen many of the films and whether I can realistically take the next day off to sleep.

We used to stay up all night drinking prosecco and eating marshmallows and popcorn but no longer do so. On one occasion we watched with breakfast in India. Best of all, we were in New York and went sightseeing, saw a matinee and were back in our hotel room with a picnic in time to watch the whole ceremony.

I don't, even when people I know or have met have been nominated. I did see the nominations in I think 2021.

Never.

Occasionally glance at the best/worst dressed articles in the week after.

Never seen it, absolutely not interested. Have no interest in ‘celebrity culture’, don’t know who they are, I don’t watch films and I couldn’t care less which designer someone is wearing.
So no, it’s not for me!!

I can't stand TV award ceremonies. All those vomit inducing speeches - no thank you 🤮

Never watch it but i will always go onto Instagram and see the outfits. I agree that it is so unbelievably crass to display all that wealth and privilege nowadays.

One reason I watch is because I have been a big-time movie-goer, and always hope that the "right" person will win. Also, there's always the hope that someone will make a really great speech, or great joke.

But every year, I feel like writing to the Academy to complain. They are forever trying to overhaul the production and it's almost always awful. They have cut the parts that were likely to be most interesting, like the speeches and the clips. It used to be that the clips, I suspected, were what would drive people into the theater, by showing a completely highly charged scene; now they just show micro-clips that show nothing and aren't at all compelling. They also used to have a brilliant guy (Chuck Workman?) who every year would to a reel of historical clips, and they parted company, so that ended. I just find it mostly gets worse.
