I want to get a Dr Dolittle DVD to watch with the DC but which would be better; the Rex Harrison one or Eddie Murphie's version? Instict would say go for the original but maybe the Eddie Murphie one is better for the DC? Thanks

How old is dc?

The Rex Harrison/Audrey Hepburn film is the only My Fair Lady imo.

Sorry! Brain absent on this post!

DD is five and DTs 2, so they won't be taking much notice!

We've got both, but the dds find the original a bit hard-going tbh. I bought it because some of it was filmed in St Lucia, where we went on holiday, but the dds got bored part-way through (even with me reminding them of that fact). They much preferred the Eddie Murphy ones.

So is this more for you?

I'm with you on going for the classic version but don't know how child friendly it is. I have seen the EM one but can't remember it, which is telling in itself.

Are these the only 2 versions? No cartoon one?

PestoMonster · 25/03/2008 20:33

We've got both Eddie Murphy ones plus the Rex Harrison one. Yes, I did get the original mainly for the scenery and because I'd seen it as a child. The dds like the Eddie Murphy ones, but are reluctant to watch the other one again. I haven't heard of any cartoon versions.

sorry I didn't make my last post very clear! I want to watch it with DD (5) so I would like something that appeals to kids. We are going to see the stage show in a few months and I thought it might be good if she knew the story first.

Well, the Rex Harrison version is more like the original book. I saw it at the cinema when I was small and was awestruck by the Pushme-pullyou creature. I never forgot it. You might find your dd is the same.

Enjoy!

ahh, the book - maybe we should read that together! Thanks for the info guys!

Don't know about the movies, but we have seen the stage show and it is very good. Much enjoyed by the dss.

Rex Harrison - can't stand the Eddie Murphy

forkhandles · 26/03/2008 19:30

oh Sophy that's interesting, I booked it on a whim for DD (5) and me for a birthday treat, and I was wondering if it might be a bit old for her?

I was thiniking Rex Harrison too Flame because if the stage show is close to the book the Eddie Murphie one will bear no resemblance to it as it's modern day I gather.

Pretty much the EM one - he understands what animals are saying like they are talking English (kinda like parseltongue), and he is called Dr Doolittle (I think, they might have even skipped that part).

If you didn't know the title of the film you would be hard pushed to link the two!!!

I loved the stage show too
