Just been to see this. I'd never heard of Nicholas Winton before this. Fascinating story, i thought it was very well done. I was expecting the film to be a real tear jerker but it wasn't at all. (Or maybe I have a heart of stone)

What poor grammar are you talking about?

Last sentence of my previous post! Grin

upinaballoon · 08/01/2024 08:37

He just conveyed what a saturation of decades of grief can do.

I don't see any grammatical mistake. I do read eloquent words in 'a saturation of decades of grief'. Such a pleasant change from the common Mumsnet 'wtf'. 😄

TheBloatedMiddle · 08/01/2024 10:04

It just did not scan right to me. But thanks. Smile

I thought it was a beautiful film, really thought provoking and how lovely to have such a self effacing character as the main hero.

The only bit I found a bit odd was that the actress playing his wife was clearly 20-30 years younger than him, but by the hair and make up presumably meant to be of a similar age. She acted well, but I felt they should have cast someone older.

I've actually just looked up the actress who played Grete Winton, and the ages of Nicholas and Grete. The actress is Lena Olin, who is 68, which is exactly how old Grete Winton was in 1987/88 when the film is set. She was 10 years younger than Nicholas so he was 78 then. Anthony Hopkins is 86, so it's actually him who is a few years older than the role he is playing, rather then Olin being too young.

rookiemere · 14/01/2024 20:48

Ah thank you for clarifying that @RichardMarxisinnocent.

It wasn't a major issue and they were very sweet in their interactions together, it did just seem like a big age gap, which it is.

Gosh the handprints story has made me cry.

I saw it this afternoon. I knew the story because I am Jewish and I have a friend who was on the kinder transports. She was aged about 2 and her parents and sister died. I liked the film very much. very understated and all the more powerful because of this I think. I thought Anthony Hopkins was incredible. He just conveyed what a saturation of decades of grief can do.

Helena spoke about her sister, who wouldn't get in the train as she wanted to be a concert pianist, and had been told she would go to Paris to train when she was older. She ended up in the camps, and when Hamburg was bombed, she was shipped in, with other prisoners, to clear the rubble with her bare hands, which wrecked them, and she thought she would never play again. She did survive the war, and after many years did play the piano in concerts. I will try to find a link to her story.

Took a friend to see it again today. Found it much more emotional the second time around, now I've looked up the full story etc.

Wintons daughter asked if Hopkins could play her dad and when he got the script he personally phoned her to tell her he would be delighted to play her dad Nicholas Winton

Saw this today and yes some amazing acting. Johnny Flynn was just amazing in the scene with the Rabbi - his whole face was alive, moving, twitching - so much more than the delivery of lines. Anthony Hopkins is one of those actors that I will watch anything in. It was moving .

MadisonAvenue · 18/01/2024 22:53

Just back from seeing this and found it so well done and very moving. I vaguely remember hearing about Nicholas Winton around the time of the That’s Life episode but didn’t know exactly what had been done and just how many children he’d help to save.

Did anyone recognise the red haired actress who was working alongside Doreen Warriner in Prague, she was dragged from the train. I can’t think what I’ve seen her in before and IMDB isn’t being very helpful.

TheBloatedMiddle · 19/01/2024 08:44

Wiki is also being spectacularly unhelpful on who the actress is.

I will keep googling.

TheBloatedMiddle · 19/01/2024 08:48

hmmm seems to be Juliana Moska. But I am having troubles pinning down a picture of her.

A1ia · 06/02/2024 18:05

We went to see it today - definitely needed tissues. I think it is especially important at the moment with all the talk of refugees and people's attitudes towards them. I liked the message of respect, kindness and having the determination to try and do what is right.

whiteshutters · 06/02/2024 20:23

Let's bear in mind though that the movie was about Jewish children not hordes of young men looking for a new life.

AnneElliott · 06/02/2024 20:37

I saw this film and thought it was wonderful. There's a memorial from the people of Chekzoslovakia in Parliament but it's not in one of the main public areas which is a real shame.

Wendalicious · 26/02/2024 19:11

Would this be suitable for a 12 year old? She’s not too sensitive thanks all.

TheBloatedMiddle · 26/02/2024 19:41

Its a 12A I think. The violence is mostly implied

Now isn't that nice? I've never been to Liverpool Street Station in my life. I'll go and look at the A to Z to see how to get there.

I wonder if the poster about 4 posts earlier took her daughter.

I pass it probably once or twice a month (last Monday the last time) and think of the former neighbour of my parents who was someone rescued as a Kinder Transport child, though not by Nicholas Winton directly.

upinaballoon · 28/01/2026 17:56

I watched it again on TV on Tuesday(?) and thought that the scenes were nicely balanced and conveyed the sense of urgency so well.
We hear the numbers of the children who died in the Holocaust but this film gave us individual children to know.

RhaenysRocks · 20/02/2026 07:50

I show it to my y9 students when I teach the Holocaust. Most films are 15 so I can't use them but this does enough to be effective and focuses on that idea of not being a bystander rather than just expoding the horror. I loved it. There's a memorial to Trevor Chadwick in his hometown, somewhere like Eastbourne I think. Lots of my students tell me they've gone away afterwards and watched other films, learned more etc.
