Apparently a big flop a couple of years ago, it's on Netflix. I'm laughing like a drain despite being mildly afraid it's going to turn into something really dodgy.

'You need to stop fighting with everyone all the time'
'FUCK OFF DANIELLE'

I really enjoyed this film, I think their was some controversy due to the age gap, unusually that the female lead was older than the male.

I agree. Am trying to look honestly at a storyline that says its OK for a 25 year old woman to be with a 15 year old boy (although I note it is very careful not to go too far sexually in this, which helps). I know it's based on a real person. But I remember a recent article by an adult man talking about a female teacher sexually abusing him over years, starting when he was mid teens and continuing into young adulthood IIRC, and it is shocking.

I supposed it's supposed to make us think? But it doesn't do that particular issue in a thoughtful way. I don't think it adds to the story, really. Anderson clearly changed lots of elements of the story, but why not change that one?

It's also a historical film at a time when relationships between adult men and girls were common while I wouldn't condone a relationship of this kind in real life its not "real" I once saw a review of a person who walked out of the film atonement because the shooting of horses was simulated in once scene, to me that is just a bizarre take.

I think the director also just wanted to make a film with Alana Haim in a main role and also tell the story of the male lead (based on another friend of his) who was this extraordinary precocious person at that time period and it was also just mixed in with him knowing the Haim family as he grew up. He's an artist, working intuitively much of the time as most artists do and all those fragments fed in and Licorice Pizza was what came out, a way to fit all those things together.

The celeb parodies were absolutely wonderful. I could hardly breathe during the John Peters monologue.

I enjoyed it, recognising it was a story about a time that no longer exists.

It was a financial flop but got great reviews at the time I think - didn't it get several Oscar nominations too, just didn't wash its face at the box office.

Hysterical! I read somewhere that he had approved it. I can't imagine reading those lines meant to come out of my mouth and thinking okay 👌 looks good.
