Any recommendations for a horror film we can watch tonight that would be suitable for my DS to watch too? He's 13 but v mature and would be fine with a 15 certificate I think. I hate horror films so can't think of any but he's really up for watching one tonight in the lead up to Halloween.

The Shining

Shaun of the dead

I second this but watch out for the c bomb in the first 30 seconds, after that it's OK.

Blair witch?

Sodie · 23/10/2023 21:58

We love horrors here (11, 13, 16). I have seen most horrors and imdb the others because I don't like to watch anything with a sexual element at all. Going by that I would say
Poltergeist
Blair witch
Black phone (fairly new)
Meghan (new)
Insiduous
Jeepers creepers
Tailgate (more tense than horror)
Original IT
Pet cemetery
Fractured (netflix)

Thanks so much for these suggestions. We watched the trailer to some and he was terrified! Too scared to watch any of the movies so we watched Tropic Thunder instead 😂
Hopefully I can revisit this thread in a year or so when he's more up for it.

Just watched Totally Killer on Amazon with 14 yo. Scary enough but not too scary.

Yea we watched this recently too with my 12yo

BitFedUpTheNoo · 23/10/2023 22:32

Watched American Werewolf in London recently with my 13 year old DS. Proper 80s SFX and some sexy Jenny Agutter bits too

ReturnOfTheRainMac · 23/10/2023 23:04

I will say, the trailers show all the scary parts. I often have to watch horror films to conclusion so I'm not scared.

NerrSnerr · 23/10/2023 23:07

The Faculty and The Craft are good teen movies.

pharmachameleon · 25/10/2023 07:52

We watched Totally Killer last night and it was entertaining. Some choice language but DS loved it.

At 13 I'd let him watch an 18. My dd11 watches 18s I just check there is no sex and read the parents guide.

Daisydoo99 · 25/10/2023 08:47

Whoever suggested The Hills Have Eyes- sorry I have to disagree with that. Without sounding boring! An 18 that’s got rape, sexual assault and disturbing scenes in general - defo don’t show him that.

I second things like The Others, Signs, A Quiet Place , Sixth Sense.

My parents were stupid enough to let me watch The Ring at his age and I didn’t sleep for weeks haha

I literally went home and turned the tv screen against my bedroom wall so no creepy girl could come out of it.

We watched the 1989 Pet Sematary with 13yo DS last night. It's an 18, but pretty tame really - the 80's style gore all looks a bit hammy these days.

Absolutely terrifying hahaha

Really depends on what they've already watched.

I'd be really careful about a lot of 70's and 80's stuff as there can be a hell of a lot of rampant boobage/sexism on display (e.g. Slumber Party Massacre) and some have a really nasty side to them. The gore can also be off the chart now they're mostly all uncut versions.

Romero's Dawn Trilogy is a possibility? There is gore but especially on Dawn it's quite stylized.

I'll also agree with the no to Hills have eyes (either original or remakes). Way too much going on. The originals are also showing their cheap as chips nature a lot now.

I'm a gore hound and have been for years but no way I'm even considering letting my DS1 watch 99% of the stuff I did.
