Anyone seen this? I took the day off work yesterday and treated myself to trip to the cinema to watch this as the running time is 3.5 hours. I knew the history from listening to a podcast a few years ago. I thought Lily Gladstone had a wonderful presence and Leo DiCaprio's great performance as a not so bright man who possibly did love his wife but is also greedy and easily manipulated.

The treatment of the native American population by the white settler, the complacency towards the deaths of so many, is infuriating. And why this story was all but forgotten until a few years ago.

You could argue that the film should have been from Molly Burkhart's perspective but I guess to produce a movie nowadays having Leo as the main character is the reason why it reached cinema screens.

What did everyone think of the ending? I won't go into details for those who haven't seen it but I'm talking about the section where Martin Scorsese appears. I found the tone of it really jarring and almost disrespectful to the horror of the story that had gone before; DP didn't feel that and thought it was in keeping with the period and a best way of tying up what happened next.

I thought it was an amazingly shocking story treated well but it really did not need to be that long - it could easily have been an hour shorter. There were sections where, had it not been Martin S, people would have said 'nah you don't need that' (eg the fire scenes).

I didn't love it. I thought that shooting it mainly from Ernest's point of view limited the film because you didn't get the story of the murders that occurred earlier and you didn't get a good sense of how the FBI solved the whole thing. Lily Gladstone and Robert de Niro were very good and I think the actress who played Anna was the best bit of the first hour.

Just got back. Adored it. And I have read the book. But I still loved the film. It had more of a personal touch. Lily Gladstone was incredible, so serene, so strong. So was Leo.

I agree, I hated the lazy ending, felt disrespectful for an audience who had invested so much time.

Ive just got back from the cinema😃 I just loved it. It passed very quickly. Not one person got up to even go to the loo. It helped we were at an Everyman so had pots of tea and blankets. Funnily I watched Once Upon a Time in America yesterday for the first time so I must be liking my long films. I mean with those three, whats not to love? Did anyone think that Leo is looking more like Marlon Brando and not in his prime. It was the down turned mouth which DeNiro does more naturally it annoyed me on Leo😃😃 I know need to read more about the subject matter as I absolutely know nothing about it apart from the obvious.

The Everyman is the BEST cinema to see a long film! 😁

Saw it over the weekend and found it frustrating, for reasons mentioned like being mostly from Earnest's point of view.

Did the book explain why so many the women married the white men? Was there a lack of men in their tribe or were they wasters or was it that the white chaps were that charming? None of them seemed to have much about them.
I couldn't work out if marrying a white man meant not having to have a guardian anymore for the money.

Lentilweaver · 13/11/2023 22:05

The other alternative for the Osage women would have been to have arranged marriages within their tribe. Mollie already had an arranged marriage with Henry Roan when she was 16. So on her next outing, she was looking for love. Also, Ernest was very charming and devoted to her, according to observers. And lastly, they did need white men to access their money.

Agree with many points here.

Great film a bit too long but very good.

I liked the ending, it was an unusual way of tying all the pieces together.

Lily Gladstone was outstanding and so much potential - i'm pretty sure theres lots more fantastic appearances to come from her - she'll improve even more as she ages

Wasn't all that impressed with DeNiro - don't think the film stretched him much, it was probably easy money for him. and he is too old to be playing parts like this and the irishman too.

Sad and shocking story about the Osage. Always had an interest in Native American history but i'll study it more now.

I did not feel the time passing, but I love Satantango so this one was a breeze in comparison ;)

I was really impressed by De Niro in the first half of the movie, but in the second half his performance felt flatter. Di Caprio is always great, but acting-wise I thought Lilly Gladstone was the stand out. Brendan Fraser on the other hand was awful.

Overall I liked the movie, I would rate it as 7/10.

rookiemere · 15/11/2023 10:11

I agree with @tescocreditcard De Niro was too old for the role. His actions didn't make sense based on his apparent age.

Just watched this on Apple TV. It was decent, but waaaaaay too long. As a pp said, it could easily have been an hour shorter. 3 and a half hours is bonkers. Well, 3 hours and 20 minutes actually, as the end credits started then.

Leo was good, but I did get annoyed by the weird downturned mouth/weird forced underbite in some of the film. Other times he didn't do it, so it was odd as he kept changing his face! Lily Gladstone was good too. The end was OK but could have been better.

I did struggle to stay with it a few times, and would personally rate it 3 stars out of 5. Not really my cup of tea, but wanted to give it a go as it had 10 oscar noms. In typical oscar fashion though, a bunch of noms have gone to a 'serious' drama film that drags on a bit.

I couldn't sit through it again.
