Took DD (6) to see this this afternoon. Its lovely - she was engrossed, and she usually fidgets like crazy at the cinema.

The sentimentality is cut through by the reality of war. David Morrisey plays a twonk army Capt, but Ben chaplin makes up for him!

Sounds good, my dcs really want to see it after seeing the trailer.

notalone · 11/02/2008 20:32

Ah good - taking Ds on Wed so am looking forward to it now!

pucca · 14/02/2008 13:03

This is a really good, film, dd loved it but did cry at the end...bless!

Notquitegrownup · 20/02/2008 12:48

Will it be scary or too upsetting for a 4 yo? Actually, if they have a big goodbye scene at the end, my big hearted 7 yo will probably suffer more. He hates sad goodbyes!

BigPantsRule · 20/02/2008 21:58

Gorgeous film, saw it today with 10, 7 and 5yo. Tugged at the heartstrings somewhat and there were a few slightly scary bits (very "snappy" monster, especially is cinema is full and you have to sit right at the front) but nothing unbearable IMO (not like ET A nice story for both children and adults with gorgeous scenery, great CGI and loads of humour.

BigPantsRule · 20/02/2008 22:00

By "unbearable" I meant unbearably sad. The ending was moving but upbeat and positive ...not saying any more than that!

Fubsy · 21/02/2008 21:19

Its a sad but upbeat ending, IYSWIM.

But there are a couple of bits with big guns etc which is quite noisy and violent, might upset some younger children.

We have just been to see it. Me (43), DS#1 (11), DD (8), DS#2 (4) and neighbours DD (13) and everyone loved it. Even DD who didn't fancy it much and was sulking initially because she wanted to see the Underdog (whatever that is ).

Quite scary but not too awful. Had to hug DS#2 a little and there were times when he his his face in the seat.

Fubsy · 21/02/2008 22:09

OMG, much better film than Underdog!! You had a lucky escape there

I suspected as much fubsy, from her brief description of it!

OrmIrian · 21/02/2008 22:13

And whilst there is no doubt he was a 'twonk army captain' it was well played because my 11 yr old DS#1 was talking to me later about how he was only doing what he thought was right and that really he was 'cool'.

MaudGonne · 23/02/2008 23:45

And for adults, it is bearable, because the cinematography is excellent.

MaggieW · 26/02/2008 20:19

Loved it and so did DS, 6, who now wants to be an actor and play Angus, and so also enjoyed by DD 4, who'd been read the book at school. Gorgeous scenery, good story and how lovely not to sit through yet another animated movie! DS now wants to go to school for book week as Crusoe - that will stretch the costume department somewhat!!!

PuppyMonkey · 26/02/2008 20:22

Loved it, loved it.

Ben Chaplin, eh? I've a few odd jobs he could be doing around here...

TsarChasm · 26/02/2008 20:24

Dc loved it. Grandparents took them at half term.

BUT...I DIDN'T KNOW BEN CHAPLIN WAS IN IT! Gutted! He is sooo yum!

PuppyMonkey · 26/02/2008 20:26

.. in a vest, Tsar! Ooh, I say!

iamdingdong · 26/02/2008 20:29

we took 4yo DTs to see it on Sat and they found it quite scary in places, I enjoyed it though!

TsarChasm · 26/02/2008 20:31

IN A VEST TOO!!?? And I missed it.

I like it when the grandparents offer to take them to see the latest holiday film.

Having sat through Chicken Little, that one about a lion in a zoo (Madagascar?) and Charlottes blimmin Web I have since assumed that kids films were a bit of a chore.

Now I find out Ben Chaplin is draped all over them in his undies. Well I'm going next time I can tell you!

PuppyMonkey · 26/02/2008 20:48

... and he was all wet a lot of the time... Calm down dear, it's only a kiddie's film..

Koleen · 02/03/2008 19:46

My son and I went with two other mums and their kids and all the kids were fascinated by Crusoe and the other mums and me were captivated by the lovely Ben Chaplin! My son loves to watch movies over and over on DVD so when this one comes out I'll be right on the couch watching with him!!
