It’s adapted from a book (which I have not read)and imagine as a book it works with all of the description etc however as a film it did very little for me. I’d be interested in hearing from others who have seen it.

I was terribly, terribly disappointed. Granted, I didn't really know what to expect, and it reminded me of when I went to "My Dinner with Andre" as it slowly dawned on me that this conversation would pretty much be the entire movie.

I thought it did a good job for what it was, in terms of directing a movie with virtually no action, but nothing about it was particularly riveting. I suspect that it's one of those movies where one filmmaker falls in love with the source and feels something about it is compelling, but doesn't realize that there's not enough there.

@MsAmerica I too was so disappointed.

I adored this, despite liking the novel less than I’d expected, as I’m a huge Miriam Toews fan, and despite finding it quite triggering because of SA in childhood. I thought it looked beautiful, the performances were uniformly brilliant ( esp Jessie Buckley, Claire Foy, Rooney Mara and Ben Whishaw, but everyone, really), but it was the writing that made it. I found it moving and profound.

God I thought it was amazing. The nuance, the allegory, the way it went full circle by ending with the removal on of consent.

One of the most accurate descriptions of how rape and sexual assault break your soul. Should be mandatory viewing for all men

I saw this at the weekend. I enjoyed it, but goodness for a short film it felt fairly long and a bit repetitive towards the end. But brave to attempt to make such a film and interesting to reflect on the subject.

Doyoumind · 21/02/2023 20:34

I also saw it at the weekend and thought it was a great film. It gripped and moved me. One element irked me but I understand it was in the book, which I haven't read.

I've just seen it. I really like small, "enclosed" films like this where not a lot actually happens and it's all about dialogue. I haven't read the book but I must say the trans character felt a bit shoe-horned in for zeitgeisty reasons. If anything it rather undermines the trans position as they only transition after being assaulted so it seems like a reaction to that rather than anything else and the reference to her "never feeling like a girl anyway" was just clunky.

But overall, I'm a huge fan of any film that is about something other than chases, explosions and special effects !

This is what irked me. I started a thread in fwr about it but not sure many people have seen the film. I know the release has been very limited.

I took DH to see it and we both thought it was brilliant. But I have to agree that the trans character seemed so out of kilter and it just wasn't believable that that would offer her future protection.
But that was such a tiny part it barely detracted from me loving every aspect of the film.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 27/02/2023 17:52

I really liked the film despite it being slow.

I don't think the character was meant to be trans as such, rather she was doing what she thought was necessary to avoid the male gaze.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 27/02/2023 17:53

I wanted to know what happened after they left though. Does anyone know?

If you mean the real-life community where the original events happened, sadly they didn't leave - and even more sadly, the reporter who went back after several years found the attacks were still happening, despite some of the men having been jailed. No. That would have been understandable but it explicitly said it was because being a woman was living a lie. The character was called Melvin and was glad when that name was used. The character was definitely trans.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 28/02/2023 11:35

@TheGirlOnTheLanding yes, I meant the real life community, that answer has made me very sad and angry.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 28/02/2023 11:36

@Doyoumind ah, I must have missed that part about living a lie.

Sausagenbacon · 05/03/2023 17:02

I loved it. But yes, the insertion of a trans character grated, especially as I don't believe that community would have accepted it
