Watched this last night.

The waste of human life for a few meters of territory.

I can't stop thinking about it. I cried at the fire gun scene Sad

The new one?

I think so? Quite sure it's a recent release

Yes I did but have also seen the original one which is really old. Agree it is all such a sad time in history.

CaptainMyCaptain · 08/01/2023 20:00

I've seen it and thought it was brilliant. The end scene going back to the beginning in the laundry was very moving even without words. Plus knowing how little the front line moved in all that time. Pointless for both sides.

SaintLoy · 08/01/2023 20:05

Where are the spoilers? Does the Kaiser abdicate?

Highlyflavouredgravy · 08/01/2023 20:06

have you read the book? it is absolutely brilliant but as you say, desperately sad

CaptainMyCaptain · 08/01/2023 20:08

I have read the book and thought it was a faithful adaptation. They even included reading letters on the latrine.

Yes. I referred to the scene where the French soldiers had the fire hose things. It was awful, like they were just killing ants or something.

I think I'll look the book up.

Watched this a few months ago really brings home the total disregard for human life, the German General not giving a shit as long as they won, found the bits about the peace negotiations really interesting as didn't know much about that. Don't think I could watch it again though so utterly brutal and heartbreaking

Herebemynewusername · 29/01/2023 19:03

Oh my god I've literally just finished watching this film. Beyond bleak. The scene where he killed that soldier in a moment of madness and then came back round saw the blood on his hands and tried to clean them in the mud and went over to his "comrade" in an effort to undo the damage... my god. This film will stay with me.

maddiemookins16mum · 30/01/2023 13:02

It’s very profound and I sobbed at the end, he was so close to the finish line.

Crumpetdisappointment · 19/02/2023 07:53

such a long film, i watched nearly all of it.
i hope to finish it

Pyewhacket · 19/02/2023 08:07

Read the book at school and saw the original 1930 film, which won an Oscar. sparked an interest I’ve had for WW1. I’ve been to Flanders and Ypres. My family lost three young men to the war and traumatised the ones who came home.

Watch 1917 and Paths of Glory.

Crumpetdisappointment · 20/02/2023 07:48

i wished i had watched it in one sitting, to give it the attention it deserved.
excellent film.

Watched this yesterday. Excellent, well made film.

Bit weird from a viewing point of view, as usually we would view films where we root for anyone BUT the Germans. Here I felt things differently. Although the main character led a 'charmed' life at times.

And as previously posted, what a waste of life. Like every war, I suppose.

Xtraincome · 28/02/2023 22:07

Me and DH watched it at the weekend and we keep talking about it. Amazing film! I felt (don't be mad) the actor from All Quiet, Albrecht Schuch (Kat); deserved the BAFTA over the (also wonderful) Barry Keoghan for Banshees.

FijiSea · 03/03/2023 23:03

Amazing film , hoping it gets a few Oscar’s.
So well acted and the soundtrack and visuals were outstanding.

TellSomeoneElse · 03/03/2023 23:07

Such an incredible film, so beautifully made but SO hard to watch. DH and I just sat in silence for several minutes when it finished. Similar, for me, to the way I felt after watching Schindler’s List for the first time, albeit a very different film.

Same
I was thinking about this film for days afterwards , for me that’s always a sign of a great film. I went away and read loads on WW1 afterwards too , it really opened my eyes.

If any of you ever holiday at Eurocamp La Croix de la vieux pont site, spend an afternoon driving the nearby Chemin des Dames. Such a beautiful line with such awful history. Lots of information points and stops along the way, beautifully tended cemeteries and a museum.
I drove it on a perfect August day, and the perfection of the day added to my - well, I can't really find a word for my feeling.

TotheletterofthelawTHELETTER · 05/03/2023 19:29

I’ve just watched this today. So bleak.

The juxtaposition of the luxury of those signing the armistice in the train carriage vs the soldiers at the front was heartbreaking. Always the way though, men in suits sending boys to die.
