Has anyone else seen it?
I was initially put off by Bill Nighy (playing Bill Nighy and the male lead being too young) but loved it. In places (Box Hill) it moved me to tears.
It wasn't perfect (is there a perfect adaptation of Austen?) But lovely.

I watched it the other night - was it on Saturday? Absolutely loved it.
Gorgeous costumes and sets.

I really like it, it is very funny in all the right places. The set design, and locations are beautiful.

I'm on a bit of an Emma theme at the moment, and have just started working my way through other adaptations.

Where did you watch it please

I'm sick and having an Austen binge from my sofa. I did S&S yesterday. Northanger Abbey BBC adaptation today. Emma tomorrow maybe!

It's currently on iPlayer.

I loved it. I rate Anya Taylor Joy as one of the best actresses currently working.

Niftythrifter · 22/12/2022 22:24

I really rated this. I thought it was a nice contrast to the film starring GP which I am a fan of. There’s something a little bit more ‘bitter’ about this version of the character for want of a better word.

I enjoyed lots of it, and thought the Miss Bates plot was handled well, but I felt that a the demands of a movie running time meant that the Frank Churchill/Jane Fairfax plot didn't have room to breathe.

And I was annoyed, as I always am with adaptations of Emma, that Harriet Smith wasn't pretty enough. She needs to be a startlingly pretty girl, to make it almost plausible (if you've led Emma's sheltered life) that she could marry so far above her station.

Sausagenbacon · 25/12/2022 08:03

I suppose it shows how much I enjoyed it, that I could forgive the male lead being far too young

Johnny Flynn is 39 so about the right age! I think we're used to older actors playing these parts.

It’s a tricky one in films and TV adaptations because the roles need to be cast carefully so the lead actor isn’t overshadowed 😂 I always think this when watching adaptations of P&P as well - Jane is meant to be stunning in contrast to Elizabeth. Tbf, the Joe Wright version managed that quite nicely because Rosalind Pike is very beautiful in a very different way to Keira Knightley.

Big Austen.fan.here. love Persuasion, the novel.and the adaptation. Went to the Jane Austen festival for about 4 years. Omg you feel.wonderful. home alone today. Going to watch at least one adaptation I think. Woo hoo. 🤣

Initially, I thought I would hate it because I couldn't imagine Johnny Flynn as Mr Knightley. But actually, he was perfect!
