Has anyone seen this? It was astonishingly good. (It's a National Theatre Live production)

There's nothing particularly new or groundbreaking in the subject matter - but the way it was dealt with and Jodie Cromer herself were both brilliant.

TW - the play is about rape and the way it gets dealt with through the legal system, so it could be a very difficult watch for some people.

I saw it at The Pinter too. An amazing performance, Jodie had the audience in the palm of her hand.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 28/07/2022 07:01

i also started a thread after i saw it last thursday
catch it if you can
just amazing and so worth seeing.

Re £50 tickets not being prohibitively expensive - they are, plus travel could easily be £100 in either train fare or petrol / parking on top.

Very glad it's being made available nore widely by NT Live. Hoping to go this week.

I think that I paid around £25 for a ticket. But agree that that is still too much money for many people.

CornishTiger · 28/07/2022 11:17

Cinema tickets are varying between £13.50 , £16 and £20 depending on venue……

KeyboardWarriorsUnite · 28/07/2022 11:28

Can we all agree that
a) not everyone can afford everything
and
b) for most people, going to their local cinema is much more cost effective than going to the Harold Pinter Theatre?

Having said that, I am deeply envious of those of you that got to see it live. I'm just grateful that it has been made accessible to the rest of us.

AuntieMarys · 28/07/2022 14:02

We paid £23 at the local Odeon.

kitcat15 · 28/07/2022 19:41

It was £25 at our local Everyman cinema…,and a PP paid the same to see it live….so like I said…not prohibitively expensive

myrtleWilson · 28/07/2022 19:49

I saw it this time last week and thought she was phenomenal.

I try to keep an eye out for NT Live performances - we went to see Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead a couple of years ago - mainly because it is one of my favourite plays (I had a tiny English A-level class of 4/5 and because we were able to get through texts quite quickly we had scope to do other stuff so we read R&G after we'd finished set text Hamlet) They also have a subscription service you can access onto TV (or pay by show) we watched Gillian Anderson's Streetcar and I think Andrew Scott's Hamlet (I know we watched the latter I just can't remember if it was NT Live or not!)

fatlazycow · 31/07/2022 22:49

I saw it yesterday and thought Jodie Comer was phenomenal.

Definitely a lot cheaper and accessible to see it at the local cinema!

My ticket was £17. Even if I was to get one a similar price at the theatre I would need to spend £s on a train fare and factor in all the extra time on travelling.

Having the option to see it at the cinema definitely makes it accessible to so many more people who otherwise wouldn’t be able to see it.

Really glad I went!

Paprikapommes · 01/08/2022 17:17

I went to a showing yesterday at my local cinema. First time I've seen an NT Live. Honestly, it was good, but I struggled with parts.

The warm up to the play was so over-egged. I don't think it really worked having a discussion on the main themes before watching the actual play. I'm not fully versed in law and the process around sexual assault, and feel like the prior discussion almost revealed too much. Obviously I knew the plot beforehand, but it would have been more impactful if my understanding of the legalities and the victims experience happened with the protagonist, rather than being given crib sheets before! Also the pop video was totally unnecessarily and a bit cringe.

Jodie as always was great, I don't know how she keeps up her energy, it must be mentally and physically exhausting. Not sure if it was the sound at the cinema I was at, but her delivery pre-assualt was VERY FULL ON, it came across as almost shouting in delivery and at times a bit one-note and overwhelming.

The set was fantastic, I bet it's amazing to be in the theatre, deceptively simple looking but so well done. Made me wish I could have gotten tickets.

I sound super negative, I did enjoy it and although the play itself was powerful think Jodie has had stronger writing/characters to work with.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 01/08/2022 18:07

I saw andrew Scott in NT Present Laughter,
he was so very good

ageingdisgracefully · 02/08/2022 09:19

I also saw it in a local cinema. I'd not normally visit the theatre, so I'm glad I had the opportunity to see this locally at a reasonable price.

What a performance by Jodie Comer. I was exhausted just watching lol.

I agree with the PP about the prior discussion and the inclusion of the music. I found the music superfluous and rather cringe.

I think a discussion could have served a useful purpose, but maybe following the performance rather than before it, to summarise the main points and to clarify some of the issues.

beguilingeyes · 11/08/2022 13:35

The fact that she's never done theatre before is incredible. I saw it at the Pinter with a day seat...queued up for hours.
I with they'd do the same with Jerusalem and put it in cinemas. Mark Rylance is something else.

Freckl · 14/08/2022 12:45

Some free tickets available via Sky VIP, if you have Sky tv or broadband.

choirmumoftwo · 19/08/2022 01:22

I agree this was a fabulous performance and for those of us who live hundreds of miles from London, these live screenings make great theatre accessible.
I've seen Kit Harrington in Henry V, Leopoldstadt and The Lehman Trilogy recently and wouldn't have seen any of them without these screenings.
I'd happily pay £50+ for a London theatre ticket but add in travel and a hotel stay and it becomes unaffordable other than as a rare treat.

AllTheSunshine · 19/08/2022 01:46

She was amazing.

JohnsShirt · 19/08/2022 01:49

I adored KH in Henry V, I've never watched Gane of Thrones so wasn't sure what to expect but he was brilliant.

SeasonFinale · 19/08/2022 01:52

Another one lucky to have seen it live back in April. Couldn't believe she hadn't done stage before. What a baptism of fire!

She was phenomenal and it was as though it was written for her (accent skills) although I know it wasn't. I believe she is taking it to Broadway too

CornishTiger · 20/08/2022 06:59

I saw this a couple of nights ago and am still processing it. Amazing.

Lunar270 · 21/08/2022 20:03

I saw this at the HP theatre earlier this year and it blew me away. Jodie Comer was astonishing.

The show had everything and I found it hugely entertaining and traumatic in equal measures. Hard not to cry at the end.

From the program I gather the writer has a legal background, however I'd be interested to know if this is how the legal system actually works in rape cases. If so I'm wondering why there hasn't been reform as it just seems so obviously wrong.

spiderlight · 23/08/2022 14:38

I saw this last night - my God, it was incredible! I'm in awe of Jodie Comer's ability to remember it all and just keep going for an hour and a half - what a performance! It was incredibly intense though and I got almost panicky at times. I could have done without the discussion bit beforehand though.

LovinglifeAF · 23/08/2022 21:49

It was excellent, I think I paid £12.50 so dearer than a normal ticket of £9.60

JohnsShirt · 24/08/2022 07:57

I paid £7.50, normal price with a Showcase loyalty card, and I get 10% of that back in points.

EmmaH2022 · 25/08/2022 22:37

Just came back from this
I didn't want to spend the money - £20 at the cinema - and I had concerns re the subject matter-
but my sis persuaded me by saying "it's 90 mins of Jodie Comer".

I haven't been properly enthused for theatre for a while now. Used to read a lot of plays, not seeing that many, but reading them is cheaper!

But this was EXTRAORDINARY and I am shouting that. Comer is once in a generation talent. I can't even think how she prepares for that, never mind what it must take to do that show every day.

Is there an understudy or is it not possible with a show like that?

I will read the play separately, I think it's been extremely well written.

On a personal level, I did have that pang of sadness at being reminded that I don't trust any man. I didn't cry, but I felt it weighing heavily on the journey home.

Something has to change. Tomorrow I will start looking at what ordinary people can do, if anything.

I am slightly surprised at the nature of the case they chose to illustrate but that might be deliberate for the outcome.

Anyway, watching Jodie Comer act is a privilege.
