Just been to watch this film. Some laugh out loud moments but some some sad and painful moments. Great acting from Emma Thompson and Daryl McCormack.
Loved the reference to Mumsnet.

I saw it last night, @Nospringchickendipper I thought it was good. It's had very mixed reviews. I thought he more than held his own against Emma Thompson (hmn that sounds kinky - not intentional!). It felt quite 'stagey' though - could easily have been a film of a play - and at times it was a bit slow.

I liked it. It was more interesting than it was a great film. And yes, very much like a play.

Watched this on Amazon Prime yesterday. Agree that it feels more like a play than a film but it's a beautifully acted character piece, regardless.

I loved the basis of the story and it was so refreshing to see a 50+ woman as a central character of a film where she wasn't a dowdy housewife. I mean, she lacks confidence and feels she has missed out on certain aspects of life but she's refreshingly candid about her children and her marriage and she's seeking change and new horizons.

I'm interested to hear how others feel about how the sex worker/paying for sex issue was dealt with. He seemed to view himself more as a therapist than a prostitute and I liked that they discussed the morality of paying someone for sex - particularly the line he gave about "you haven't bought me, you've bought my services". However, I found myself constantly questioning if I would be okay with the premise if the gender roles were reversed? And I honestly don't think I would be. I mean she says she has people interested in her but she doesn't want that. How would we feel it it were a man in that role instead? Making an active choice to buy the services of a much younger woman? I'm massively overthinking this I'm sure!

Edina, you're not overthinking, just thinking! ☺️ It's a hugely serious and important issue. From what I understand, Leo's experience with ET's character bore absolutely NO resemblance whatsoever to the experiences of the vast majority of men and women in prostitution - a luxury hotel room, a clean and well presented punter, pleasant conversation. Leo made passing reference to being 'beaten up' now and then, but it was very much glossed over. I don't think the film has anything serious to say about prostitution

I thought it was a really well-acted film, but ultimately pretty fluffy
