Volume at baby friendly screening

Okay tell me if you think I'm being silly here, but we're just back from a baby friendly screening at a Glasgow cinema. It was top gun and we left 10 mins in because I thought it was too loud. We said to the management and got a refund and they said they could have potentially turned it down more and that this was their first time doing this kind of thing. This kind of freaks me out because I'd have thought they'd have had to have safety checks on sound levels considering it was a screening for babies. Anyway did I over react? (Didn't make a scene and was polite, I mean just by leaving).

Umm sounds a bit dramatic. I’m guessing if it was that loud others would have said something as well?

Oh I hope we weren't that. We just got up and quietly left. We weren't even going to ask for a refund. I just wanted to ask if the screening had been set to a lower setting than normal and the manager thanked us for our feedback, said it could be lower and offered a refund. It was just surprised there didn't seem to be a recommended safe level for a baby screening.

There were other parents there, but not a lot maybe ten. And if they were cool with it then good for them. I just thought all the engine noises and such were very loud Indeed. Certainly loud enough for me, and my middle aged years.

Not silly or dramatic at all. I think it's good that you mentioned it to the management.

Surely you need the sound up to cover the crying? I went to baby friendly cinema and theatre when mine were tiny and the only difference from a regularly show was that you could take under 4's in (not U.K., under 4's weren't allowed into cinemas or theatres)

Hugasauras · 02/06/2022 18:36

At Cineworld (Cinebabies) the sound is a bit lower.

NamechangeFML · 02/06/2022 18:38

If it was everyman, you couldve asked them to turn it down. Theyre usually quite nice
The bass etc is suppsedd to be down
most of my mum friends have ear defenders for the babys

What cinema was it? I've been to odeon at the Quay and it was fine. Pre pandemic though.

Floofsquidge · 02/06/2022 18:53

Baby Cinema at both showcase & vue are lower volume and enough light to find things in your changing bag. Sounds like your cinema maybe just needed some feedback or a reminder to turn it down a bit.

I think it's probably a fine line between a safe volume and wanting to cover up the crying/fidgeting etc.

knittingaddict · 17/07/2022 19:49

I would have left too.

Personally I find all films are too loud at the cinema. You get used to it after a while, but I don't know why they do it. With modern sound systems everyone would hear it ok even if they turned it right down. Puts me right off going.

BakeOffRewatch · 17/07/2022 19:51

I’ve been to a few and yes they are quiet so that babies nap through

Kite22 · 17/07/2022 19:55

I also find that all films are too loud.

I don't think it was unreasonable to think that if it was marketed as being suitable to bring babies too, that it should be a LOT quieter. But fair play, the Manager said it was their first time and thanked you for the feed back. the only way people can change things is by them knowing how they need changing.

Of course, someone else might say it needs to be loud to drown out the noise from a collection of babies / toddlers - or you wouldn't hear dialogue, so I guess they need to take feedback to see which makes sense for the business commercially.
