I saw the film ages ago, but watched it again recently (I loved the book).

Didn't want this in Religion, but want to know how much of it was true. Tried to look online, but so many sites are biased (many Christian sites etc deny it).

So, what part of the film do you think was true?

we got the dvd for xmas. Is it worth watching?

Avizandum · 10/01/2008 21:05

I certainly think the proposition that Jesus married Mary Magdalene is not unreasonable.

jofeb04 · 10/01/2008 21:49

Yogabird,
I loved it!

Avizandum, that's what I was thinking, all the stuff about Mary Magdalene.
Also the Last Supper painting. Never noticed it before, but it does seem to all fit together.

Well a lot of it was based on a book called Holy Blood Holy Grail, which I read back in the early 80's when it first came out. A lot of it turned out to be a hoax created in 1953 by a convicted conman. called Pierre Plantard.

The book is quite readable (some of dan brown's other books are awful!) wasn't so keen on the film. I think to be honest you need to take most of it with a pinch of salt.

I think as with everything based hundreds of years ago it should be thought of as a good story that may be possible but that we'll never know.

It's certainly possible but I would expect I could come up with a plausible story based around Jesus' life, I know the way I explain the bible to my DC's isn't the way everyone wold read it but the way I interpret it and I could be totally worng, but I could be right. We'll never know.

Forgot to say, years ago I went to a town in the South of France called Santes Marie de la Mer. Which is where Mary Magdelene and James and John were supposed to have landed. For some reason I thought that the boat was still in the church there but I can't find any information on the boat being there.

i'll be honest i got caught up in all the hype when the book came out, i loved the book and ended up reading all of dan brown's books, but the film was terrible,

tom hanks is a fantastic actor, but this role didnt suit him, just didnt do the book any justice.

if you like the da vinci code book, i think you'll like angels and demons, that was one of his better books

wuzzlefraggle · 06/03/2008 17:16

Harj27, I agree about Angels and Demons. And apparently, that one is now being made into a film too

branflake81 · 11/03/2008 11:50

None of it is true. It's fiction.

teakettle · 11/03/2008 12:03

Its fiction. I enjoyed the book and I enjoyed angels and demons but you do need a willing suspension of disbelief, especially if you have any knowledge of art or Catholic theology. I thought the film was vile.

bossykate · 11/03/2008 12:08

vile film. i am no fan of opus dei but thought they could probably sue for defamation based on the book and film. catholic bashing very socially acceptable in the uk and us of course

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 11/03/2008 13:55

I enjoyed the book for a bit of light reading and just saw (some) of the film at the weekend - couldn't bring myself to watch all of it.
