Operation Mincemeat - I loved it

Obviously it’s a very well known story, but what a good iteration this was.

I thought the cast were great - does Kelly Macdonald ever age? - and the story developed in a pacy way, with enough going on even if you weren’t captivated by the central war story.

I was very moved by the last few scenes at the graveyard too.

Did it differ much from 'The Man Who Never Was'?

It’s been a while since I watched that - obviously the story is broadly the same, but I found this version gripping and entertaining.

It was all ok by me. It's a long time since I saw The Man Who Never Was so I don't remember enough to compare. I liked the pieces of info at the end about various ones of them in real life and what they did later. I quite liked looking at Colin Firth's getting-older face now that he's 27 years older than he was when he was Mr. Darcy. I liked looking at the others, too!

Thought it was really good. I did get a little distracted trying to remember where I knew the actors playing minor characters from.

And loved the things that will be incorporated into Bond, moments from Fleming.

Wish there had been a bit more of Churchill, felt a waste for Simon Russel Beale to get all made up to only have a couple of scenes.

Toddlerteaplease · 18/04/2022 22:13

I also really enjoyed it. Very moving at the end where they showed his epitaph on his tomb. Wasn't keen on the portrayal of Churchill though. Not quite sure why, just wasn't quite right.

I really enjoyed it as well, although I did feel the made up romantic element was a bit overdone, but the rest was fantastic and spent a lot of time trying to figure out all the famous actors in the small roles.

I am hoping to go and see this with DH in the next couple of weeks. I read the book a few years ago so looking forward to seeing how they have adapted it for the big screen.

I haven't seen it yet but I HIGHLY recommend the stage musical which is about to open at the Riverside in Hampstead. Absolutely fantastic - inventive, funny, poignant and brilliantly written.

It was okay. Thought it'd be played more as a farce instead of a straight spy thriller with comedic moments. The romance was an irritating, unnecessary drag that really held the film back IMO. I thought it would be a better use of time to dedicate more of the story to the agents on the continent instead of relegating them to just a couple of montages.

PermanentTemporary · 21/04/2022 19:33

Really enjoyed it because of the acting, and I wasn't exactly expecting to tbh - feels like I have just watched too many WWII films and was dubious about the fictionalistion. I also became incredibly depressed during the nostalgiafest trailers. Kill me if I ever watch Downton Abbey A New Era. But the cast absolutely knocked it out of the park.

Why would they play it as a farce? I doubt those involved at the time saw it as a farce.

The trailers made it seem funnier than the film actually was.

Proves the point, that these days nothing is as it appears, in the realm of cloak and dagger, and that their is always or usually more to x event or story than is apparently the official version

Thoroughly enjoyed it. Not perfect but a good way to spend a couple of hours. Loved the casting of two Mr Darcy’s together, and the James Bond jokes were quite amusing. 7/10.

EmmaH2022 · 04/05/2022 17:35

I really really liked this, just great all round.

love the novel jokes too. Lots of dry humour.

and surely they let Matthew MacF( I'm not sure of the spelling!) use the word 'spooks' and he was in 'Spooks' and that was one of the gentle pieces of humour.

I really enjoyed it too. And DD 14, who didn't know the story at all, was on the edge of her seat!

JennyAct3 · 31/05/2022 14:00

I was really really looking forward to this, I love war films and spy stories. Bit disappointed. The romance part was given far too much time. Kelly Macdonald was so sickly sweet (I think that’s all she does) and I thought Colin Firth could have done the part in his sleep. It needed more edge and less sap for me.
