Fabulous! Tim Burton is totally on form Jonny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter sing amazingly well (and HBC has the most difficult songs!) and so does Alan Rickman

It does take a bit of adjustment as the film is based on the stage musical (Sondheim) so the spoken dialogue is quite minimal - but this is unlike any other musical - as it is also a very decent horror (in the classic hammer style) so there is mucho blood spurting from slit throats etc. Contrasts beautifully with the mainly monochrome look to the film.

Jonny Depp does sing like a young David Bowie (or David Essex) - concious of sounding 'cockernee' - but he is very convincing (despite looking like Edward Scissorhands older evil brother)and makes Sweeney Todd sympathetic, and HBC is Mrs Lovett the 'special' meat pie maker who has an unrequited love for Todd.

There are some great songs as well (but they need to be heard in the context of the film to be understood).

You all must go and see it when it comes out.

saw it last night, and i loved it!

Lizzzombie · 25/01/2008 15:31

So glad you all seem to like it, I can't wait to see it next week! Am actually going out on a date with DP to see it - baby sitter has been arranged and everything (doesn't happen very often, so I am even more chuffed!)

NoIHaventChangedMyName · 26/01/2008 21:14

I went last night to see this. Started off disappointed that I couldn't ogle JD with all that dark make up on - a disappointment soon forgotten. yum. Really must renew my quest to find out if he really does drink in Dp's parent's local...

NoIHaventChangedMyName · 26/01/2008 21:15

Oh yeah, and the film itself was fantastic. I very very very rarely bother to see a film more than once. I'd love to see ST again!

missingtheaction · 27/01/2008 12:43

I saw it last night - loved the way it looked but foolishly had assumed it was a bit less of a musical and a bit more dialogue. Not really my kind of thing. also found the Mockney accents a bit much - the Divine JD sounded a mite too Jack Sparrow occasionally, and HBC looked fantastic but I just couldn't really believe her accent.

So undoubtedly fantastic for what it was - but you do have to like Tim Burton, the original musical and Blood to really appreciate it I think!

scorpio1 · 27/01/2008 12:44

I saw it on Friday and thought it was fab - DH said the 'bursting into song every bloody 2 mins' ruined it slightly.

I did tell him it was a musical

Crunchie · 27/01/2008 12:53

I love musicals, BUT I am a wimp. I can't stand really scarey things. I have seen the stage shew and it was great. Bt you can't do so much on stage.

I think I really should go, but I am going to need DH to hide behind

smeeinit · 27/01/2008 13:03

oh i soooo badly want to see this!
i dont egt the grading....it says 18 at my local cinema but on the website linked below it says pg for under 18s?

misdee · 27/01/2008 13:04

i want to see this, but dh is refusing. but i have seen saw IV and having to see alien vs predater this week, as i made him go to see 'i am legend' last week.

mawbroon · 27/01/2008 21:39

We went to see this last night. DH and I haven't been to the pics for over 2 years!! He wasn't keen at all and thought it was shite, but I loved it.

Crunchie - I'm a bit squeamish about stuff too, but given that we know the story involves slitting throats and making the bodies into pies, there isn't any surprise behind the gore which made it ok for me IYSWIM.

How funny was Sascha Baren Cohen

Sherbert37 · 29/01/2008 09:59

Went yesterday and it was great. Quite a few of the audience complaining about the musical aspect, though. Not really a film for 18 year olds who had gone for the blood and gore perhaps? How can Willy Wonka, Jack Sparrow and ST be the same person - JD is very talented, AND he can sing.

Jbck · 30/01/2008 10:59

Went to see it yesterday, fantastic. Wasn't sure about the singing, the accents & Sacha Baren Cohen before I went but it was all great.
I've never seen the musical so wasn't sure what to expect but really enjoyed the songs and there wasn't a weak acting performance or singer amongst them, although Joanna was a bit ear splitting at times. Toby deserves a special mention.
Crunchie I don't do horror/gore normally & a few bits were pretty yuck but not the actualy blood tbh. The bone crunching thud was worse but it's worth it.
I'm thinking I might go for the Mrs Lovett look when I buy some new make-up for Spring, I imagine HBC just got up & went to work like that everyday bypassing the make-up lady on the way.

alfiesbabe · 01/02/2008 20:34

Loved it! JD and HBC made a good job of the singing - by no means perfect, you could tell they're actors and not professional singers!!- but they carried it off. Costumes, sets and general atmosphere was great.

lunavix · 01/02/2008 20:38

thought ex-h was winding me up

He went to see it and told me that I wouldn't enjoy it, but he sounded quite sincere.

Bearing in mind, the nightmare before christmas, corpse bride, edward scissorhands et al are some of my favourite movies and he'd never heard of tim burton before

pirategirl · 11/02/2008 18:24

I saw this today, rare treat, to get out of my piddly little town.

Went to a real cinema!!!

I really enjoyed it, great experience.
