Before late teen dd and I (60) slink into a cinema full of children, is it any good?

OP posts:
AlviarinAesSedai · 08/04/2022 18:16

I really enjoyed it and no children in my screening.

TangledNemo · 08/04/2022 19:06

My husband and I had the screening to ourselves (12:30 showing). There’s a scene at the start that isn’t good for kids, but overall the movie is probably the best of the Fantastic Beasts ones.

Pieceofpurplesky · 08/04/2022 19:32

Just back. We loved it.

IstayedForTheFeminism · 09/04/2022 02:11

Loved it. Loved it, loved it, loved it. So did teens.
And from what I could see most of the (completely full) cinema were adults.

(Wasnt so keen on the family sat behind us with children too young to understand the storyline who consequently spent the entire movie asking questions, kicking my chair, eating food very loudly and generally ruining the experience.)

mum2jakie · 09/04/2022 19:02

Does it work as a standalone film or do you really need to have seen the previous two? (Only seen the first one.)

IstayedForTheFeminism · 09/04/2022 19:06

I think you need to have seen the first 2 personally.

Cookie79 · 10/04/2022 19:45

I took DD and her friend today and DH came too (for once as I’d booked a sofa style cinema with legroom). I gave a brief overview of the first 2 films before we set off and apart from the occasional whispered question for clarification he got it.

Which scene was that?
I cant recall.

SLT2022 · 13/04/2022 09:23

Another loved it too.

AlviarinAesSedai · 13/04/2022 13:45

The qilin screen? I looked away.

ChiefClerkDrumknott · 14/04/2022 10:51

I really enjoyed it. Mads was wonderful, as always, and I was quite moved by Jude Law’s performance at times. They had great chemistry together and the opening scene is 🔥

sonjadog · 15/04/2022 19:41

I saw it today. I really enjoyed it. I'm not sure it was really a children's film though. I thought the relationship between Dumbledore and Grindelwald was quite touching.

sonjadog · 15/04/2022 19:41

I definitely think you need to have seen the first two to understand it.

sickofthisnonsense · 15/04/2022 19:44

I love the films but this was confusing.
I'd suggest rewatching the first 2 before seeing this one.
I struggled to relax and enjoy this one given the way JK has been treated by the actors, Johnny depp loosing his role but the Credence actor being allowed to continue.

notacooldad · 15/04/2022 19:45

I has r seen any of the films and I understood what was going on.

sonjadog · 15/04/2022 20:01

Did you? I would have had trouble if I hadn't seen them!

MoonBat · 15/04/2022 20:05

I loved it. Went for a 7.45 showing and there was one ten year old there (I know the age because it was a friend of my son's, I didn't ask 😁) but the rest were adults.

Mads makes a far more convincing Grindelwald I think. Depp played him as his usual quirky Tim Burton esque character and it was hard to see how people would have related to him. A definite improvement!

sonjadog · 15/04/2022 20:39

I think that it was easier to see how Dumbledore could have feelings for Mads' character rather than Depp's character. I liked Depp as Grindelwald, but he wasn't sexy like Mads is.

Flaunch · 15/04/2022 20:40

I enjoyed it but wondered why they chose 2 actors that’s looked so similar to play Grindlewald and Vogel, I had to really concentrate on who was who 😯

No Johnny Depp was no loss though, he was miscast to begin with.

Kanaloa · 16/04/2022 01:52

I thought it was okay. Like others have said that relationship between Grindelwald and Dumbledore really works because the actors play it well - I thought in the second film Johnny Depp came across a bit too cartoon villain? Maybe the white hair and accent did it, but Grindelwald in this film comes across much more human - not necessarily in a good way! It made him more nuanced.

I thought it was poorly plotted in parts though, and the ending seemed weak and implausible to me. There were several moments where everything could have easily been cleared up but it just wasn’t because people said odd/vague things rather than just saying oh actually it’s x. Plus there was a lot of convenient things that worked for the plot but didn’t make a whole lot of sense.

In short I think there was a lot of potential but in the end it was only okay. I think that story with Grindelwald and dumbledore works wonderfully (partly I think because it’s pulled basically from the source material) and there was something good hidden in there plus the effects were brilliant but the plot was weak in parts.

Kanaloa · 16/04/2022 01:55

@AlviarinAesSedai

Yeah was glad I hadn’t taken dd! She would have been in bits.

Think it depends on your kids though, some sensitive children could have been really really upset by it. But then this series hasn’t really been for young kids, even the first one has credence being abused, talk of murder and killing etc. It’s not like a little kids film.

Okbutnotgreat · 16/04/2022 08:31

Dd11 and I really enjoyed it but she was the only child there and knows the HP and FB books/films inside out. We would actually have liked the film to start when Albus and his brother were younger so we could see how those youthful relationships developed but this was a reasonable compromise and if you know the story no problem to understand.

JustDanceAddict · 18/04/2022 13:40

It was ok. Overlong though!
No kids, we went for 8.00pm showing

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 23/04/2022 17:01

Was alright. Still think the first was a lot lot better. Don't see how they can drag this out for 2 more films..if they are still thinking of that

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 23/04/2022 17:03

I bloody loved it!!
