Saw this yesterday with teens and dh and we all enjoyed it. The filming made me a bit queasy at times with some sweeping round stuff but we were quite close. And a couple of questionable cgi moments - anyone else spot the possible cgi dancers?
Overall it was brilliant and Russell Brand did some fab acting rather than just being RB. Loved the cast, French and Saunders together was great.

I enjoyed it too. Preferred murder on the orient express. Didn’t see the need for the poirot moustache war back story though. And the dancing in the jazz club was a bit too “dirty dancing” for me as I sat in the cinema with my elderly parents! Especially with the armie hammer real life accusations swirling in my brain. That was a bit ShockConfused
I thought French and Saunders were a bit wasted as they could’ve been given funnier lines. Angela Lansbury was prefect in the older film. But I loved the 30’s clothes and design and the boat looked great.

ENoeuf · 13/02/2022 21:07

Oh yes dh and I were arguing about whether the dancing in London in the 30s would be like that.
I know flappers we’re letting loose but it was a bit 😲. I wanted to read the book to see if the moustache plot was in it.

Really enjoyed it although agree not as good as MOTOE. I love Kenneth Branagh so he can do no wrong in my eyes. Yes I spotted the cgi dancers on the boat! Did have the major ick whenever Armie Hammer was getting frisky/dirty dancing though. Couldn’t separate his character from him at any point 😬😬😬

ExcaliburBaby · 13/02/2022 22:17

Oh and to the PP - the moustache backstory isn’t in the book. There’s a few characters changed slightly from the book also - I don’t mind that though, other previous versions have stuck to the book totally so no harm in a bit of artistic licence in my opinion I hope KB makes more Poirots

chipsandpeas · 13/02/2022 22:18

i love the original, how does it compare?

ENoeuf · 13/02/2022 22:40

@chipsandpeas I need to let someone else answer as too far from memory. So glad I didn’t invent the CGI dancers - they were so funny! I really loved this more then Orient Express maybe because I really want to see Egypt?

I really enjoyed it. But definitely got the ick re Armie Hammer. And I cried at a death. I really need to toughen up.
Gal Gadot is stunning. Loved the costumes. In fact just loved being in the cinema.

CrimbleCrumble1 · 14/02/2022 15:20

I really enjoyed all of it, watching it was a really nice way to spend a wet Sunday afternoon. I also loved all the dresses and Russel Brand was very good.

JamieFraserskiltspeaksout · 14/02/2022 18:15

I loved it! The costumes were wonderful and the acting great. I thought the spurned female lover was stunning - even more so than Gal Gadot. Stunning film

ENoeuf · 14/02/2022 22:19

Gosh I had missed the arnie hammer stuff, google has given me the ick and some serious wtf?

yeah the nightclub dancing was a bit much!!

and the moustache backstory annoyed me because what were the chances with those kind of injuries that he could have grown such a perfectly-groomed moustache? the hair follicles would have been damaged along the scar lines would they not?

Peregrina · 15/02/2022 19:51

i saw it at the weekend and the moustache backstory annoyed me too. It didn't add anything that I could see.

ENoeuf · 15/02/2022 20:01

Ah interesting, so the moustache story is just an addition for this? Off to google. I might go see it again actually I really enjoyed it.

I intend to see it but not at the cinema. I liked the book and the 70s (?) film version.

I didn't think the recent MOTOE was a patch on the 70s version with Albert Finney, but that's one of my all time favourite films so not surprising really.

WellTidy · 15/02/2022 20:09

Took Ds14yo to see it this morning - rainy February half term, and not a lot else to do (three cinema trips planned for this week as a result) - he really enjoyed the genre, which is great, and the setting is fantastic. I thought French and Saunders were underused too, but gosh, Jennifer Saunders, is looking amazing. Such an attractive woman.

rookiemere · 20/02/2022 20:53

Just been to see it, didn't realise that was Russell Brand at all.

I find Branagh an annoying Poirot and found the love life storyline somewhat tedious. Also felt the music didn't sound particularly of its era.

However the cinematography (apart from the ghastly spinning room thing) was amazing. My absolute favourite scene was where they changed the scenery from Egypt to London at the end.

I didn't think it was brilliant, but I didn't think it was dreadful either.

ENoeuf · 20/02/2022 21:27

Yes to the spinning room I felt quite dizzy at times.
Brands teeth always give it away for me.
I really enjoyed it.

Yeah, I was thinking that too. I thought his back story was a bit of a distraction from the film.

I loved the Peter Eustinov version with Angela Landsbury, I could watch it again and again, but this was an interesting adaption. I loved French and Saunders and Russell Brand and Annette Benning were great. I would have liked to have seen more of Sophie Okenedo and Letitia Wright, I loved their parts. For some reason Gal Gadot and Arme Hammer made me a bit queasy, maybe because of his real life. On the whole I really enjoyed it.

Did anyone get the hint about retiring to the countryside to grow marrows? Death of Roger Ackroyd is one of my favourite Poirot's so will be interesting how they do it.

mum2jakie · 09/04/2022 20:31

Ah yes I spotted the reference to The Murder of Roger Ackroyd too!

Glad other people felt the same as I did about the moustache back story. It didn't really add anything and undermined the character of Poirot who is written as being vain and egotistical.
