Has anyone seen it?
I'm thinking of going. Jamie Dornan has nothing to do with it Wink

I didn't ike the soundtrack. But that could just be me.
Agree about the self indulgent.
Also I didn't really like the adult cast in it. Wasn't sure if it was supposed to be a comedy at times. It wasn't gritty enough for me to be a great film.

cromwell44 · 23/01/2022 21:47

I saw this earlier today. Pretty unimpressed, a film not quite sure what it wanted to be. A couple of good performances but mainly soppy, nostalgia with a lack of realism that I found a bit irritating. Accents a bit up and down Too (looking at you, Judy Dench). Lacked tension and weirdly had no sense of jeopardy, which was odd in the circumstances. Written and directed by KB and was his childhood memories, but really needed a bit more of an edge for me. Has good reviews, so I’m out of step by just not feeling it.

peachgreen · 23/01/2022 21:53

I liked it, but found it a bit patronising (as someone who lives in Belfast now). I think if you see it as a story told through a child's eyes (which it is, really) it works well enough though. And the young lead is great.

Hated the soundtrack though. I can't stand Van Morrison.

BlueBlueCowWondering · 24/01/2022 12:03

I really didn't like it though I'm glad I went to see it.

For me it was just too realistic/ violent/ depressing. I remember bomb scares when I was a child and the film brought back all those memories. I grew up just outside London and remember vividly shopping centres or other places closed because of a 'suspicious package'.

manseymoo1987 · 24/01/2022 12:15

I loved it. Having grown up in Belfast it brought back a lot of memories. Don't like van Morrison but the music was fitting.

Peridot1 · 24/01/2022 17:08

Just back from seeing it. I really enjoyed it. Wasn’t sure what to expect but I like Catriona Balfe and saw some interviews etc with her abut it and thought it sounded good.

Jude Hill was amazing in it.

I quite liked the sound track although not a huge Van fan.

AiryFlyingFairy · 24/01/2022 18:30

It was enjoyable. Very watchable. Takes you right back to that era.
But the soundtrack wasn't for me. Also I found the dance scenes a bit corny/cringey.

Didn't really get the issue with the 'back tax' /financial problems, might just be me being a bit dense.
'Buddy' was brill. Ciaran Hinds too. As for Jamie he doesn't even have to try for me 😍

ISpyCobraKai · 25/01/2022 15:07

Just back, I really enjoyed it and surprisingly the soundtrack since I'm not a fan of VM either.

Graphista · 25/01/2022 22:36

plus we have Cineworld passes through Tesco clubcards so it's a free night out

For this alone I am
An IDIOT! I just signed up and never thought to check if any of my loyalty cards had a deal with them - how does it work?

I think I have to stay with them for 3 months before I can cancel? And I've not even got the plastic card yet. But when I can cancel I will do and do it through clubcard

rookiemere · 25/01/2022 22:44

@Graphista £67 in tesco clubcard vouchers for a year's membership, it does depend what area you're in though as some more expensive.

It's great DH and best friends have membership as well, so lots of free nights out.

ISpyCobraKai · 25/01/2022 23:12

My friend pays for his Cineworld membership its like £10 a month.
I'm so jealous.

I go to Showcase, they do a free rewards card, with discounts on Sunday evenings, all day Monday and Tuesday, plus 10% back on whatever you spend.
The odd freebie too, they did a free showing of Belfast.
Still though, I wish I could pay for a year, but monthly.

Susiesue61 · 29/01/2022 11:55

I went with DD last night. My parents are from Belfast. I wondered what people in Northern Ireland made of it! It was sad when they left at the end and left Granny, that made me think of mum and dad leaving. It wasn't as much about the troubles as I thought it would be

upinaballoon · 29/01/2022 14:46

Bloody Sunday, 50 years ago. I saw a bit of Kenneth Branagh talking about this film, ' Belfast', but I didn't hear all of what he said, so I have no idea whether he made it to coincide with the 50th anniversary but I can't help thinking that it isn't just a coincidence.

I liked the film. I wouldn't mind seeing it again.

(Digression:-Saw K Branagh as Henry V years ago, on film, nice touch of mascara.)

MomOfTwoGirls2 · 29/01/2022 18:20

Just watched it this afternoon.
I found it very emotional. Beautifully shot, gorgeous on big screen.
I loved it, as did DH and DD (17)

MrsLargeEmbodied · 29/01/2022 19:18

oh i want to see this
and liquorice pizza

Kitkat151 · 29/01/2022 19:46

@JosephineDeBeauharnais

Saw it yesterday and enjoyed it. Beautifully shot and great soundtrack. There was a bit too much of the boy for me, little bit one-dimensional and it isn’t Judi Dench’s finest hour but it’s quite moving.
But that’s the whole essence of the film....it’s a semi autobiography of Kenneth Branagh life....thus the film revolves around the little boy🙄.... you must have known that before you went 🤷..... that’s why the parents have no names in the film , just Ma, Da, POP and Granny....it’s all from the little boys perspective..... you maybe want to read up before you go to the cinema again eh
Kitkat151 · 29/01/2022 19:49

@ISpyCobraKai

The soundtrack was spot on.... especially at the end when the credits rolled and they played VM ‘and the healing has begun’
inigomontoyahwillcox · 30/01/2022 09:03

Saw it yesterday - definitely best on the big screen. I thought it was really well done - except the music - not a Van Morrison fan (although it was appropriate). Absolutely from the eyes of a 9-year-old, liked that the only parts in colour were those things that brought excitement/the outside world into his life, i.e. the movies and theatre.

CrimbleCrumble1 · 31/01/2022 19:25

I really enjoyed it. I love going to the cinema.

Viviennethebeautiful · 02/02/2022 22:09

I have seen it twice. I loved it more and cried more the second time. To me, a child the same age as the young boy at that time it was my life on film.
Just the best.

ISpyCobraKai · 02/02/2022 23:45

@CrimbleCrumble1

I really enjoyed it. I love going to the cinema.
Same with loving the cinema. Weirdly I only discovered this last year, but now I go at least once a week. I didn't actually for a few weeks over Christmas/New year as there was nothing I wanted to see and I really missed it. I'm seeing Nightmare Alley next week, and have already booked and paid for all three Godfather films which are being re-released this year, and Romeo and Juliet ballet.
Nospringchickendipper · 03/02/2022 15:53

Watch it yesterday and I must admit I did shed a tear.
I enjoyed the sound track but I do like Van Morrison

gabsdot45 · 03/02/2022 20:18

I just saw this film today and I really liked it.
My dad is from Belfast. He met and married my mum in London and they moved back to Belfast in the summer of 1969, I was born in Feb 1970.
I've often wondered what possessed them to move to Belfast then.
They stayed for 2 years and after Bloody Sunday left.
My dad either laughed or cried throughout. It really touched him.

SceneDrama · 03/02/2022 20:35

I found it very self-indulgent, very sanitised and very cheesy. I laughed in parts but found some of the humor a bit shoe-horned in and laboured. The get togethers weren't rambunctious enough, it was too clean. Maybe it was all the OMO Grin
