I’m early 30s so not sure if this is why I have this opinion….after lots of talk from people I know/online hype I finally watched East is East.
When it ended I was a bit Hmm I thought there was another 30 mins left. I don’t get it, I don’t understand the hype…I was sure it was meant to be a comedy? Is it just me? Did I completely miss a hidden plot?

I loved it! I didn't think it had a big hype around it though, I've never seen people raving about it online.

TooBigForMyBoots · 16/01/2022 18:08

It's a comedy like Brassed Off is a comedy.

LubaLuca · 16/01/2022 18:08

I think it's a really good film. I've never heard anyone raving about it, but I think it was reasonably critically acclaimed when it was released.

Energysaver · 16/01/2022 18:09

Wonderful film. Love it. West is West is pretty good too.

LubaLuca · 16/01/2022 18:11

I'll add, I think Linda Bassett is brilliant in it, totally believable.

sochicsocheap · 16/01/2022 18:42

Meh, so there are people who enjoyed it then. Maybe I’m too young for it Grin

Show some bastard respect!

EIIa · 16/01/2022 18:43

That’s a joke and a line from the movie

Shmippy · 16/01/2022 18:44

Is there a lot of hype around East is East?

DelurkingAJ · 16/01/2022 18:44

We had exactly the same reaction when we watched it a few years back. DH’s final comment ‘how in hell is domestic violence a theme for a comedy?!’ summed it up!

Tillymintpolo · 16/01/2022 18:45

It’s brilliant

horseymum · 16/01/2022 18:49

It's not meant to be a comedy, it's quite sad really. Our family is mixed race and I watched it in the cinema with some cousins. There were definitely some bits only our family found funny or 'got'.

Rummikub · 16/01/2022 18:51

Yes to the above.
I don’t see it as a comedy.

LubaLuca · 16/01/2022 18:51

Maybe that's why I didn't enjoy Bridgerton.
AnyFucker · 16/01/2022 18:54

What hype ???

It’s meant to be a bittersweet comedy, I think. And pretty realistic regarding the domestic violence.

BootySOS · 16/01/2022 18:56

I'm the same age as you and watched it years ago. Really funny. Really good depiction of the times.
Interesting, funny and very well cast.

Haven't heard people rave about it but it is known to be a good film.

lottiegarbanzo · 16/01/2022 18:57

Surely it's warm and touching, in the face of difficult life experiences, rather than comedic?

FourTeaFallOut · 16/01/2022 18:57

Frigg off and wash your bastard curtains year dirty cow!

If you can remember an insult from a movie decades old, that's a good movie.

JaneJeffer · 16/01/2022 18:59

I love it. Why is it being talked about now?

Toocoldtocamp · 16/01/2022 18:59

(Caveat this with i can't quite remember the plot but remember liking it...) isn't it 'of its time'. As in, it was unusual at the time but less so now. Because media didn't show all kinds of people and when it started too it was a bit one dimensional.
I'm always pointing things like this out to DC. e.g. in Friends, Ross's ex wife is a lesbian. Very very unusual and out there plot in 90s . Not at all now.
Just we see a lot more diverse topics now. But once not that long ago we didn't. (I'm 50 so quite a bit older) but this change has been recent. Last 15 years at most. Look how dated 'Bend it like Beckham' looks now.

blyn · 16/01/2022 19:02

I've seen it three times, it is comical with some sadness. I also found it interesting and it's very well acted. However, different strokes for different folks so if it doesn't float your boat, never mind.

PasstheBucket89 · 16/01/2022 19:06

its supposed to be a very real life, bleak at times drama with some funny bits thrown in,

being a mixed race family in the 1970s must have been rough at times.

ClariceQuiff · 16/01/2022 19:09

There's a lot going on in the film - racism, homophobia, domestic violence - but it manages some genuinely funny moments. I really like it.

littleburn · 16/01/2022 19:10

It's not a comedy though! It's a drama (based on a play) that has some comedic elements to it.

Puffinhead · 16/01/2022 19:10

I saw it when it first came out. I seem to remember it being billed as a comedy - obviously it’s not.
