just watched it in Sky premiere because I am very down in the dumps. My cynical, actually-having-an-ounce-of-taste side is saying it was derivative and predictable, but what the hell do you expect from a romcom?

My other side is trying to decide between Jude Law in glasses and Jack Black in black. That side has no taste at all.

Not seen it but sorry to hear you are down in the dumps. I like your posts.

Jude Law in glasses - I so would.

PortAndLemonaid · 20/12/2007 23:07

I Skyplussed it last week but haven't got round to watching it yet. Feel it might go better with a nice glass of wine...

Saw this when it came out and enjoyed it.

Jude Law in glasses wins every time (and I'm not usually a Jude fan).

Sorry to hear you're down.

Thankee kindly for your kind words everyone

It was 100% chick flick, which is great if you're in the mood. Jack Black always looked as if he wanted to say something really rude (and I confess, I wished he would )

And, as it's not even remotely a real possibility, I won't choose between them - I'll have both!

Its a lovely feel good, non taxing Christmas film. I loved it! Every one looks gorgeous, and its a fluffy bit of escapism.

Its funny how its been made for the USA market, with Kate Winslett living in a thatched cottage, seemingly 5 mins from a mainline station, but still in the middle of nowhere.

Chocolate boxy and lovely though! This is Barry Norman, signing off.

ChristmasLauren · 21/12/2007 10:03

I really enjoyed it, it was filmed in the village that I spent most of my youth so had the extra factor of "Oooh look, it's The White Horse" etc etc. Total predictable chick flick.

Also, it is only about a 10minute drive from a main London commuter line!

i loved it, easy watching and as another poster said some nice 'escapism' !

DarrellRivers · 21/12/2007 10:06

which village was it filmed in?
I found JL terribly insincere, CD irritating, but loved KW and JB.
I loved LA and I have never thought that, it was so old Hollywood and now want to go there.

ChristmasLauren · 21/12/2007 10:08

Shere in Surrey, they've filmed quite a few things in Shere as it is such a stereotypical image of the true English Village.

DarrellRivers · 21/12/2007 10:10

There was also lots of not very cold looking snow
Shere looks beautiful
So about £3 million for the cottage then?

ChristmasLauren · 21/12/2007 10:14

Yeah it's not cheap... Nothing ever on the market there anyway!
I'm fairly sure it was filmed in summer as I recall my Mum calling me very confused as to why there was snow around, bless.

Lauriefairycake · 21/12/2007 10:18

cottage wasn't 'real'- computer generated.

I know this because I loved it and wanted to see if you could stay there, thought maybe it was National Trust or something and looked it up on the t'internet

I rally need to get a life

foxinsocks · 21/12/2007 10:24

I watched this the other night too!

I normally HATE chick flick type movies but surprised myself by sitting through the whole thing. Thought KW was good but JL/JB were annoying but they were given very set roles weren't they.

I laughed when they showed that cottage. I thought that was exactly the sort of picture they would want to create of Britain for the Americans!

flatmouse · 21/12/2007 10:28

I watched it last night - would have been a bit annoyed had i gone to cinema to see it - but as a relax whilst finishing wrapping pressies with a glass of wine it served it's purpose.

Bit of a slow start, and very predictable but emminently watchable.

GrumpYULEhorsewoman · 21/12/2007 10:38

I blardy KNEW it was filmed in Shere!

Went to my cousin's wedding there last Sept (he lives in Shere) and as we drove through the village I was all 'ooh' and 'aah' at the loveliness of it. I said to DH that it looked like a film set rather than a real place.

Love the movie - it's a totally non-taxing, feel good film that's pretty to look at - which is sometimes just what you need. Love CD's hair in it, upset that my own hairdresser was unable to quite reproduce the style on me. Can't fancy JL though - he is the absolute spitting image of my brother and it would just be weird.
