Old (pre-1960) films - where to watch/buy/rent?

Does anyone know where I can see old films?

I know about The National Archives but they only seem to have really obscure films, not well-known, famous/popular films.

Is there a Netflix equivalent? I'd be happy to pay for it. There used to be TCM (Turner Classic Movies) on Sky but that seems to have gone and 'classic films' now seems to mean 1980s and onwards.

Check amazon, they have most dvds. Sometimes films from 40’s/50’s are only released in America but you can buy them through the uk amazon as well as the American site.

Or check YouTube as you’ll find full movie uploads on that.

Cinema Paradiso is a DVD rental by post company which has an enormous back catalogue of old / foreign films

Talking Pictures is great. Loads of fabulous old films, and old TV series. On Virgin it's Chanel 445

Worth checking BBC iPlayer. Down at the bottom of their Films category they have Silver Screen Favourites, which includes some crap but also some stone cold classics like Citizen Kane, Bringing Up Baby, Top Hat. There's about 30 of them.

Wow. I'm very impressed! Thanks you lot. I had no idea about any of these.

That's my Christmas sorted. I'm so happy! I love old films, especially the 1950s era, where they still speak terribly terribly properly. Xmas Grin

I didn't know that. Thank you! Like the OP, I love old films.

Well, that Encore site is absolutely ruined by Unicef adverts every 15 minutes, plus one at the beginning and end of each film, so its essentially one big Unicef advert with a film spliced in between. Such a shame.

Another vote for the wonderful Talking Pictures, it's a brilliant channel.

Frankii · 26/12/2021 09:49

Dh is a proper old school cinephile so I feel like I can answer this one Grin BFI player, Mubi, Curzon, and YouTube funnily enough, lots of old movies on there (although the quality isn't always great).

astorsback · 27/12/2021 21:06

Thanks @Frankii I'll take a look at those. Again though, YouTube is ruined by the splicing adverts.
