Anyone seen this? I saw it yesterday and loved it. Will Smith great. Oscar potential imo.
Long film but flew by.
Funny and uplifting. Would recommend.

I want to see it, what age would you say it's suitable for?

Shedmistress · 21/11/2021 19:32

What is it about?

MrsPsmalls · 21/11/2021 19:42

The Williams sisters. Yup really enjoyed it, but found it a bit uncomfortable at times. No idea what age, but there is some violence in it.

sashagabadon · 21/11/2021 19:45

Follows the Williams sisters. And the plan their dad had to make them world famous. But he seemed an excellent dad and his plan worked!
I would say it’s for teens plus really. It’s a 12 I think but probably not engaging enough for that age. Unless you have a tennis fan/ player. They’d enjoy it

Thank you OP, I was going to post about this.
If it wasn't for having a Cineworld unlimited card I wouldn't have bothered and I'm so glad I saw it.
I'm not a great tennis fan, so I didn't know the challenges the Williams sisters faced to actually be able to compete. The race issue was handled sensitively and in a way that really made you think.

I felt a bit uncomfortable about a man being centre stage in what was a female triumph, but I liked that they showed all the aspects of his character.

It was a bit too long - like most adult films seem to be these days - but I felt very uplifted for having seen it and it made me research a bit more about the Williams family.

sashagabadon · 21/11/2021 19:51

I too have a Cineworld card! And it’s been slim pickings recently but I think this is one of the best films I’ve seen for a while. I’m looking forward to House if Gucci next week Smile

Wasn’t this what the William’s sister’s goal though? They wanted to honour their Dad and were involved with the making of the movie I heard.

rookiemere · 21/11/2021 19:53

I'm very excited about House of Gucci @sashagabadon - I'm away next weekend and I've asked my fellow cineworlders not to see it without me.
I feel I deserve a few good ones after sitting through Spencer.

sashagabadon · 21/11/2021 19:56

Yes I saw Spencer. I actually enjoyed it although it was bonkers Grin

I'm seeing four films this week but that's not one of them, it doesn't really appeal but if it gets lots of good reviews I might see it next week.

sashagabadon · 21/11/2021 20:01

And yes the sisters were producers so presumably had massive input into the story. I liked that it followed their father’s plan. Their success was due to him after all. He was the one that instilled their confidence in themselves and made their videos and got their managers and knew when to protect them and when to let them lead. Their mum too but she had 3 other children to look after but seems instrumental in Serena’s training.

The trailer didn’t appeal to me and I wasn’t really bothered about seeing it but I absolutely loved it. Would definitely recommend.

JacquelineCarlyle · 22/11/2021 23:24

I watched it yesterday - was fantastic! Didn't know much about their background pre them already being great, but his self belief & perseverance was phenomenal!

I'm hoping House of Gucci is good as would like to see that (watched Spencer recently & thought that was dire!).

Shedmistress · 23/11/2021 07:24

It is about two successful women in their field but called King Richard?

And not Queens Venus and Serena?

How odd.

Random comment but if you’re looking fof films to see Last Night in Soho is excellent!

Interesting to hear about this film, thanks Smile

sashagabadon · 23/11/2021 07:34

I saw it less as a film about women but centred on a man than a film about sports stars and their dedicated parents ( in this case their dad, although their mum was certainly dedicated too). Parents put in as much hard graft to their children’s success but don’t get much of the glory.
I’d also love to see a film called “Queen Judy” about the Murray brothers and I wouldn’t see that in any way as taking away from the brothers personal success.

And what are the actual chances of someone making a film about Judy Murray?

sashagabadon · 23/11/2021 10:03

I bet someone is thinking about it! These life story films are all the rage now.

OP posts:
JacquelineCarlyle · 23/11/2021 10:29

I'd love a Queen Judy movie!

I think it's been very clever to do it as they have done - showing the vision and plan their dad had and only through his resilience, determination and belief did they end up as successful as they did. It also means they can both do their own stories / movies in future - they could actually do loads of movies from each of the different perspectives (including their mum and sisters etc).

Oftenithinkaboutit · 26/11/2021 13:08

Suitable for very mature 9/10 year old?

JacquelineCarlyle · 26/11/2021 14:04

I'd say so, unless they're very sensitive. There is a bit of violence but it fits with the story and there's no sex and nothing gratuitous. I don't remember any swearing (but I swear a lot, so might just not have noticed it).

It is quite long though, so more a risk of them getting bored!

kindlyensure · 27/11/2021 23:59

I just saw this, really enjoyed it. It is very tennis-y so I think it would appeal if you had a tennis playing child of about 12 upwards. But it is more about Richard's 'plan' then a kind of will-they-won't-they win the tournament sort of vibe, so maybe a little more mature than a straightforward bio-pic of V and S.

I got to see it during the week and thoroughly enjoyed it. I'd say suitable for teens upwards, I don't think it would hold the interest of younger than that and it's quite long.

I'm surprised at your uncomfortable comment, the sisters seem very involved in a film to celebrate their father, why would that make anyone uncomfortable? Especially as it showed him warts and all. He deserves a huge amount of credit for their sucess

middleager · 28/11/2021 08:45

I too enjoyed this film.

So many challenges for the family to overcome. I thought this film was partly steered by the sisters, so if that's the case, no issue with the title. It was too long though!

Looking forward to House of Gucci. I found Spencer dreary, OTT and hard work.
