My 13 year old, would like to watch a scary movie with friends. Any suggestions for something fairly tame. She hasn't seen anything scary previously. Obviously will check it out with friends parents.

Goosebumps is perfect. Think it’s on Prime.

Goosebumps or Nightbooks?

Hocus pocus! The nightmare before Christmas and I think the first actual scary movie I saw was the others which I think is a 12.

I'm watching Halloween at the moment and although it seems freaky and jumpy it's actually quite tame

Edward Scissorhands? Not really scary but definitely on theme. Or The Corpse Bride. Beetle juice is not scary really but might also fit the brief.

The Lost Boys.

The Woman in Black
I Am Legend (Excellent film though might be a bit too scary.)
Misery
The Sixth Sense
The Others
Ghostbusters

My dd is 12 nearly 13 (yr 8). We've watched shaun of the dead, the newest chucky film remake, underworld, stranger things (series but still awesome!), beetlejuice (not scary but fun and spooky!).

Best advice is Google the film and read parents review on imdb or common sense media. We were going to watch the craft but reading that reminded me of parts I think might mentally upset dd. I think she could handle the horror aspect but not psychologically.

We watch trailers first to gage her reaction and for now its blanket ban on 18 rated films. This saves confusion for her, worst she can watch is a 15 accidentally, whilst some are worse than others none will be as bad as most 18 rated horror. She is pretty good at asking first though. I know this isn't what you asked but I would personally not be happy if another parent suggested my child watch an 18 rated film so I would stick to 15s or under if they are 13.
