I'm surprised there's no thread on this. I saw it last night and was transfixed. It was the most life affirming but also heartbreaking film I've seen in a long time and I hope it gets all the awards it deserves, Anyone else?

I really liked the musical numbers but found the rest a bit pedestrian and formulaic, and it was far too long. I enjoyed the end credits more than the rest of it!

I sobbed after watching it - not sure why I found it so touching but enjoyed watching it so much.

I was shocked at what Aretha went through, and the lack of news about it. A few articles say she had her first child at 12, but there’s no mention of abuse!

I enjoyed it but felt it lacked something, can't put my finger on it. I felt I was watching Jennifer Hudson play Aretha, rather than watching Aretha, if that makes sense.

Credits definitely the best bit!

I'm a bit late to this thread but watched Respect last month and feel the same as some of you.

There was a lot I didn't know about Aretha so her life story was interesting as well as disturbing in places. At the same time, I thought the script let the film down. It tried to do too much, was too long and didn't flow.

I also agree about Jennifer Hudson. Felt like I was watching her acting and singing Aretha. I also found it really hard to warm to her! There was some humour lacking. Perhaps it was the script again!

Not my favourite biopic but watchable though. A good reminder of her classic songs.

I saw it. It was...ok. I don't think it will win awards (imagining coming back in Oscar season to eat my words obviously).

I love Jennifer Hudson. But she's never drhnja drop in her life. And her tone when she sings is beautiful but not like Aretha Franklin.

But I'm nitpicking. It was a good film and it did spark my interest in Aretha Franklin. The little girl who played her as a child was amazing too.
