Just as the title says really - what was it all about? I have no clue!

More unsettling /disturbing than horror but still . It was more weird than The (original) Wickerman

Ha ha, my sister said the same about that film, my SIL on the other hand (film buff), she loved it. I read the synopsis and was just like, "nope!", sounds way too weird for me.

Livpool · 22/08/2021 22:18

Thanks @BadgeronaMoped it was just more weird than anything. And SPOILER all those horrible men deserved die!

Oh i know...so beautiful on the one hand and yet so absolutely WTF

Livpool · 22/08/2021 22:20

Yes @JollyHostess and the main character looked gorgeous as the May Queen. That was about it

I am obviously a compete pleb 😂 (as is DH who watched it with me with half an eye in the snooker)

Oh I LOVED it.

So my interpretation was that she was done with being walked all over (boyfriend treating her like crap at the beginning) and so she bought into the whole thing as a way of having some control over her life (at least until she hits 70!)

But holy shit, it was disturbing. It was the juxtaposition of the beautiful scenery and flowers and absolute horror behind the scenes.

Livpool · 22/08/2021 22:44

Thanks @SnotandBothered - yeah that makes sense cos her boyfriend was a complete shit.

I didn't not like it but I am just a bit confused ha

Watched this a couple of weeks ago and I'm still thinking about it!

I think I enjoyed it? Though a couple of bits were shockingly disturbing, on balance I'm glad they dressed her boyfriend in a bear and got rid 😅.

Livpool · 22/08/2021 22:59

Ha definitely @movingonandfree - he deserved his fate

For days I couldn't stop thinking of the scene where she catches her crap boyfriend cheating on her and starts sobbing hysterically and all the women cry with her. It was so cathartic. The juxstaposition of her having to be understanding and perfect and not "burden" her boyfriend with any problems and always go along with what he wanted even if she didn't want to, and all these women just understanding her and feeling her pain.

I don't think the community was at all an idyll there is a man near the end who adminsters a concotion to the sacrifices and tells them they won't be able to feel any pain or fear, and then there are shots of them burning alive very much in pain but for her it was still better than the treatment she'd had before.

RaininSummer · 22/08/2021 23:24

I kind of enjoyed it with my moments of jaw dropping WTF just happened. The bear bit was so freaky. And the huge mallet ready to finish off the elders if the fall wasnt enough. Wicker Man on acid

ThreeWitches · 22/08/2021 23:25

It was totally bizarre. I enjoyed it, but bloody weird and disturbing.

I preferred Hereditary.

SnotandBothered · 22/08/2021 23:40

@ThreeWitches I enjoyed Hereditary (Toni Colette was amazing) but I preferred Midsommer. Ari Aster might have to be one of my "any twelve dinner guests".

Oh, yes - she gave an amazing performance.

Agree about Aster!! Cannot wait to see what else he puts out.

robotcollision · 22/08/2021 23:59

I had a student who was so traumatised by that film she was almost catatonic in class for two days and admitted it gave her nightmares for weeks. She put me off ever seeing it.

idrinkandiknowthings · 27/08/2021 14:00

My sister and I went to see this at the cinema and ended up in fits of laughter, particularly during the copulation scene. Why it was lauded as a masterpiece only the gods know.

mother! on the other hand, is a work of genius.

blubberball · 14/02/2022 23:34

It was the most fucked up film I've ever seen honestly. A good film really, but just so horrible and disturbing.

Celiamary · 17/02/2022 10:39

I presume it did not feature John Nettles or Neil Dudgeon.

Freebus · 17/02/2022 13:41

Agree v disturbing! Especially the last 20 minutes.

ChaToilLeam · 17/02/2022 13:57

I read the synopsis and decided not to see it. Sounded just too nasty!

Francescaisstressed · 17/02/2022 13:59

I think the idea that people see her as 'free' from expectations is ironic, given that she has literally joined a cult. It's almost like the audience is taken it by it as well.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 17/02/2022 14:03

God I hated it!! Saw it at the cinema and found the last 20 mins so disturbing. I guess that’s the idea but it was too much for me. Much preferred Hereditary

I LOVED Midsommar, I took it as her gaining some control over her life (also her mentor was cute, murder aside)

@SnotandBothered I haved weirdly been too scared to watch hereditary.. is it not much scarier than Midsommar

SlightlyJaded · 17/02/2022 14:44

@Luredbyapomegranate

Actually, for me Midsommer was 'scarier' overall because it was far less supernatural. I'm always more troubled by things that 'could' happen.

Hereditary is probably a scarier watch but it's more traditionally horror/scary - so I found it easier to dismiss.
