Seen it today, not sure what to think.

I LOVED it! Laughed out loud so much.

MrsEWeatherwax · 02/08/2021 16:10

I laughed too, but a giant one eyed starfish!

And possible spoiler! The first 10/15 minutes? What the hell!

I thought it was hilarious. Loved the chapter titles, loved the first section. Over the top violence and gore, obviously, but so so funny.

myrtleWilson · 02/08/2021 16:50

We watched Birds of Prey a few months back & enjoyed that so was thinking of going to see Suicide Squad..

NewspaperTaxis · 03/08/2021 23:20

Should I watch the 'first' film from a few years ago before seeing this? Assuming this isn't a reboot all round - both have Margot Robbie in them.

MrsEWeatherwax · 05/08/2021 21:33

You do not need to have seen Suicide Squad, to go see The Suicide Squad.
Other than Harley and Flag and Viola Davis they are all different characters!
I loved Flag and Bloodsport and especially Rat girl. Plus the soundtrack is cool.

Is it really gruesome? My 14 year old is nagging to see it.

sociallydistained · 05/08/2021 21:37

Its extremely gruesome… I would of LOVED it at 14 Grin still do!

FeatheredHope · 05/08/2021 21:38

Is it better than Suicide Squad, because talk about missed opportunities.

😂
MrsEWeatherwax · 05/08/2021 21:55

Is it better than Suicide Squad, I’m not sure, The Suicide Squad is definitely funnier and seriously more weird.
Plus I’m going too see it again, so what do I know.
A 14 year will probably find it hilarious.

I saw it today too.

I can't believe they killed off so many characters in just the first 15 minutes!

Amanda Waller is still a stone hearted cow and the monster (a gigantic turquoise and shocking pink starfish with one huge eye) left me wondering how it and all its victims survived all this time - face hugging all those people, but they didn't seem to eat or drink.

Idris Elba is fabulous as Bloodsport - I love his grizzled look and his loyalty to Flagg.

Tip - Wait until the very end, there are a couple of surprises.

Gingernaut · 05/08/2021 21:59

"Hand"

"Yes. That is your hand"

The way Viola Davis absolutely deadpanned that line was fabulous.

MrsEWeatherwax · 05/08/2021 22:04

Yes, you have to stay until after end credits, hardly anyone stayed when I saw it.
Also was so excited Nathan Fillon was TDK, but what stupid special power! The detachable kid. But I did laugh. Plus the weasel Confused

I loved it and had almost resigned myself to lasting about twenty minutes before giving up - I saw it in the 4DX screen at Cineworld after a long day, so I had extra effects too. I'm going again as soon as I have time Grin.

I'm glad I didn't let the last one colour my view too much beforehand; I did sit through it all the way through, but I don't know why. I can only think it must have been raining like hell outside.

sociallydistained · 06/08/2021 11:51

All the missed opportunities were taken!!

I’m gonna try and see it again with my DP as I saw it with friends. It’s totally not one of my friends thing and she loved it! It’s so ridiculous how could you not? I loved Shark.

SocksAndTheCity · 06/08/2021 12:09

I loved Shark too!

Explaining to somebody who hadn't seen the film that Sylvester Stallone was in it voicing a shark that walked on two legs was a bit of a task Grin.

TartanBonnet · 07/08/2021 00:51

Omg! LOVED it!!!

Gruesome and funny and the cinematography, just out of this world.

And such strong female leads too!!

I would say this is one of top 10 films!

Didn't want it to end and want to watch it straight over again!

DarceyDashwood · 20/08/2021 22:54

Absolutely loved it!! All the cast were fantastic but I’m just in awe of Margot Robbie. She is just amazing!

idrinkandiknowthings · 27/08/2021 14:06

Going to see this tomorrow with the teenager!!

NewspaperTaxis · 14/09/2021 11:09

This is what I don't get about modern cinema. Now I know this film has been out for a while and I feel like the square teenager who (showing my age now) catches on to a hit single only when it's been number one for a while and is sliding down the charts but I hoped to see S Squad this week at my local and it's not on, not even once. Instead they've got that Jungle Boat film still and other stuff but you'd think after the past year there's a truckload of releases to catch up on with special events and re-releases - instead, nothing, it's the crumbs Hollywood has managed to put together during the pandemic.
I'd happily see Wonder Woman 1984 at the cinema this week or any other week. Even Tenet.

Is this film showing anywhere up in London? I will have to check.

SocksAndTheCity · 14/09/2021 11:51

@NewspaperTaxis if you're feeling wealthy it's on tonight at the Odeon Luxe Leicester Square, or I think the Vue still has it on? Smile

NewspaperTaxis · 17/09/2021 20:49

Ah, thanks @SocksAndTheCity - too late for me. Thing is, I enjoy visiting London so much - it's not too far away but still a bit of an event - it seems a waste to spend it watching a film! But perhaps I'll have another try.

NewspaperTaxis · 20/09/2021 16:09

I did get to see The Suicide Squad at my local, I think it was its last stint. I did find it horrible and stupid - perhaps I wasn't in the right mood, but though the jokes were there it didn't seem as funny as Deadpool or its sequel. In terms of violence, it's the most violent I've ever seen, worse than Kill Bill or anything like that. Worse, it didn't come with a morally justifiable narrative really. I mean you know the Bride has reason to be pissed off and that yo-yo wielding schoolgirl is an utter bitch and has it coming so that makes everything alright!
I remember the Daily Mail chiding Kill Bill because it wanted the audience to cheer as a schoolgirl died weeping tears of blood. Put that way it sounds ruddy awful but of course when you see the movie, a saintly nun would be on her feet punching the air - that's the magic of cinema (!)
But in this I didn't really feel like punching the air at any point. You see heads sliced apart like a boiled egg, you can't call it gratuitous violence any more than you'd say a porn movie has gratuitous sex, that seems to be the point of it. Not trying to moralise but rather answering the question of would you want your kid/young teen to see this...

That said, to sit in the cinema for a couple of hours uninterrupted by ad breaks or the temptation to go on Mumsnet or Twitter does act as a remedy for poor concentration.
