Mentioning Woody Allen films in Films You shouldn't Watch Again Thread has made me remember when I did go to cinemas in 1970s-1980s. I used to see independent foreign films , often Italian, at a small cinema on Oxford Street or just off, maybe on/off Charing Cross Road. Does anyone else remember it's name? Just curious.

The Prince Charles?

Not independent, but I used to go to the Curzon cinemas to watch foreign films. I mostly went to one in Knightsbridge ish but I know there are others

I used to love it as it was so civilised!

Regent Street Cinema?

Thanks to all suggestions above. I did google and those came up but I did not recognise them. I mentioned Oxford Street because I would walk down the full length but I think it maybe was more off Charing Cross Road but not in Soho. I remember it was much smaller than other cinemas probably only one screen. Talking about these old films brings back so strongly the feelings I used to have going in and watching the film and then coming out again. I was often quite upset by the Italian films they seemed to be quite violent. Does anyone else remember 1900?

Prince Charles is a great independent cinema.

I bet it was the Curzon Mayfair

Thanks again to all responding. I have located it. It was the Academy on Oxford Street, operated as an art house cinema for 80 years until 1986. It was frustrating as I went often in late '70s as well as the big Odeeon at Marble Arch and the Empire Leicester Square. Does anyone else remember the distinctive smell old cinemas used to have? The seating, the sweets and pop and even cigarettes and always a bit of damp? It was an all round sensory experience.

We've got a local independent with that smell. Maybe not the cigarettes now but definitely the damp.

1900 is a great film in many ways, and relentlessly depressing in others. It's a hard slog of a film, yet still a complete masterpiece. My favourite Bertolucci film is Il Conformista though.

I have looked at more details, it did have several screens and it was upstairs which i didn't mention as I thought i was misremembering. Interestingly the famous Marquee Club was on the lower floors in 50s/60s. Interesting that is to anyone who has read or listened to pop and rock musicians reminsences of that era. Now that must have had a powerful smell.

@JohnnyLULus, yes that is what i remeber the overwhelming feeling of despair, was there a scene of a (German?) soldier bashing a baby's head in by swinging it by its legs? I can still see it now, over 40 years later. But I actually think films (and other performances) should affect us strongly. Or what is the point of creation. That is why I don't understand those who can watch horror fims and just laugh them off as not real.
