I know it's over 2 nights. I'm loving watching the adapted format and enjoying Joanna scanlan co-presenting

It's the behind the scenes awards which I know aren't for everyone but I love all aspects of film and film making it fascinates me.

No spoiler just in case but I'm so pleased with the winner of the costume and hair and make up awards so far

I saw it and wish it had been on BBC1 to give these 'behind the scenes' awards a higher profile.

EachandEveryone · 11/04/2021 19:01

I havent seen many of the films but I will be watching tonight.

Graphista · 11/04/2021 19:16

I've not been able to see many of the films yet either but I still love watching the awards.

Several are on my watchlists if they're available on streaming platforms

I'm housebound so usually have to wait for them to reach streaming point, corona has meant I get to see stuff sooner!

Anyway watching now while awaiting my dinner cooking (should have been ready before it started but my stupid oven is slow) and I'll probably have a wee glass or 2 of wine too

Dermots presenting style is poor. Is arms are either crossed, or in his pockets.

Love looking at everyone’s houses!

Graphista · 11/04/2021 20:25

Yea I'm not a fan of Dermot presenting this kinda thing too casual

LOVING seeing the nominees homes and their families reactions. Bukky Bakray's family - amazing reaction and beautiful speech from Bukky

OP posts:
Standrewsschool · 11/04/2021 20:31

Bukky’s reaction was lovely.

Also, the octopus winners. The man at the back on the left was in tears.

peak2021 · 11/04/2021 20:57

Looking forward to Another Round, also Nomadland, when cinemas open.

Agree not a fan of Dermot O'Leary but thought Edith Bowman a good presenter, which over the 20 or so years since I first saw her on 'yoof' tv has always been the case.

HagenDaz · 11/04/2021 20:58

Edith was swaying all over the place.

EachandEveryone · 11/04/2021 21:06

Dermot is overrated. Theres afew Im keen to see. I started watching Calm with Horses tonight but it was too violent I had to turn it off.

Graphista · 11/04/2021 22:29

Ohh the octopus documentary winners were lovely!

Have to say I was also SO pleased to see Noel Clarke be honoured, love him.

OP posts:
Graphista · 11/04/2021 22:32

I'm in a bit of a rut viewing wise so I think I may challenge myself to watch a bafta or Oscar nominated film that I haven't seen before each week starting with this years nominations. What do you guys think?

OP posts:
GrownUpBeans · 11/04/2021 23:11

The Father and Another Round have cinema releases planned for June.

Enjoy your viewing, sounds a fun plan. I did something similar during the first lockdown, enjoyed a lot of films I otherwise wouldn't have bothered with.

EachandEveryone · 11/04/2021 23:18

I don’t fancy the Borat one at all although I enjoyed the first one

Rockpipit · 12/04/2021 00:51

I was really pleased that Youn Yuh-jung won best supporting actress for Minari - and a wonderful acceptance speech! I loved Minari.

peak2021 · 12/04/2021 08:19

@EachandEveryone I am giving the Borat film a miss. Seems a one trick joke and to be honest Sacha Baron Cohen has done better.

Standrewsschool · 12/04/2021 08:54

@graphista - thank you for the list. Very useful. I think I may print it out so when we have a ‘What film shall we watch discussion’, we can pick one instantly from the list.

Graphista · 12/04/2021 13:30

@GrownUpBeans yea I'm thinking it'll hopefully be like when I was at uni (English) and had to read books that if I'd gone on the précis I wouldn't have chosen to read those books myself and I ended up discovering books and authors I absolutely loved.

I need pushing out of my comfort zone sometimes and I think this will be a good way to do it, and as they're award winning films they should mostly be good films right?

The only ones I refuse to watch are those where I have strong ethical objections to the makers, I won't watch anything involving Roman Polanski, woody Allen or Alfonso cuaron for example.

Some I also absolutely know aren't for me - eg Borat. Never been a Sacha baron Cohen fan

@Standrewsschool glad to be of help.

Netflix and prime have lists of award winning films and you can search based on the type of award too (Oscar, bafta...)

OP posts:
peak2021 · 12/04/2021 16:43

@Graphista I am in agreement with you about films by Roman Polanski and Woody Allen. Avoided J'Accuse for that very reason, even though it is about a historical event I would like to know more about.

Graphista · 12/04/2021 16:49

You like Alfonso cuaron though? My reason for avoiding him is the plagiarism.

OP posts:
peak2021 · 13/04/2021 11:35

@Graphista never seen any of Alfonso Cuaron's films at all.

I was lucky enough to see Les Miserables (the 2019 non Victor Hugo film set in the banlieue) at the cinema in September. An excellent film and so well written.
