Hi

My teen DD v rarely shows any interest in school so she surprised me last night when she said that she really wants to improve her spoken Spanish. I want to pounce on this whilst it lasts!

I speak french and told her I used to learn a lot from watching french films whilst still having the subtitles on.

I don't really know any Spanish films though. I have just found a list of current Spanish films on Netflix so will have a look through but I wondered if anyone had any of their own recommendations?

Fine with any sort of drama, Rom com, horror. Just nothing too political / heavy weight.

Thanks.

The orphanage and the body are pretty good thriller/ horrors. I also love a Mexican film called batteries not included- so many twists and turns.

Great thanks @Dogmatix34 will take a look.

There are a lot of films by Pedro Almodovar that are wonderful. Try Volver, with Penelope Cruz and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown.
Jamon, Jamon is a classic too - also Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem.

Pan's Labyrinth

Money Heist on Netflix is great.

Hola! I am a Spanish teacher and I recommend most of the movies from this list.
www.goodhousekeeping.com/life/entertainment/g26007872/best-spanish-movies-on-netflix/
Some of them have strong language so please do check before watching.e g. The platform.
There is one from Argentina called "el Faro de las orcas" a beautiful movie. - global issues topic.
I also recommend"diecisiete" - teen and links perfectly with post 16 education and work topic.
Happy to help if you have more questions about movies.
Pat

@raskolnikova

Pan's Labyrinth
I was going to say this too There’s also a series on Netflix called Always a witch, siempre Una Bruja I like it and it’s set in Colombia (I think) so I found the accent quite easy to understand
Mumteedum · 27/02/2021 17:23

If you've seen Vanilla Sky, the original Spanish film I think called Open Your Eyes with Penelope Cruz was good. Also, Argentinian film..The Secret in their eyes was good but think was an 18 certificate.

If it is still available via BFI player, I enjoyed The Olive Tree. Interesting family dynamic, very well written (by Paul Laverty, the long term collaborator with Ken Loach).

peak2021 · 28/02/2021 10:10

If you accept some of it is aimed at an adult audience and choose carefully, Pedro Almodovar films.

Saisong · 28/02/2021 10:15

If you have any DVDs, especially children's films then see if they have a Spanish language option - familiarity with the film may help with following the language.

El Mar Adentro

Cowgran · 01/03/2021 05:43

I really enjoyed Contratiempo/The Invisible Guest.

As far as I remember there wasn't actually depictions of violence though there were two murders and it's a mystery/suspense.

AnnaFiveTowns · 01/03/2021 05:52

For films I second any Pedro Almodovar especially: Volver; All about my Mother; Live Flesh...

For Netflix series - Elite is great for teens; it's set in a Spanish high school and it's basically a murder mystery involving lots if young, good looking people, think Pretty Little Liars but better. In fact when I was doing teacher training I did 2 days at a very expensive boarding school and the Spanish teacher there gave the class homework to watch an episode of Elite. She knew once they'd watched one that they'd carry on and watch the whole series - and they did.

Also La Casa de Papel (money heist) is fab.

peachypetite · 01/03/2021 05:55

Casa de papel on netflix!

TanteRose · 01/03/2021 06:20

I liked Roma

www.imdb.com/title/tt6155172/

interest12 · 01/03/2021 06:22

Casa de las flores!!

rosegoldwatcher · 02/03/2021 09:20

I came on here to recommend The Invisible Guest (@Cowgran - I didn't guess the twist, did you?)

The latest Almodovar film is on Netflix I think; Everybody Knows, again starring Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem.

Cowgran · 02/03/2021 10:33

@rosegoldwatcher it was great wasn't it. No I had not seen that twist coming at all. So good. Even my husband liked it and he doesn't always love my choice of movie.

ValancyRedfern · 16/03/2021 10:58

Pan's Labyrinth is one of the best films I've ever seen.
There's an Argentinian film called 'La Historia Oficial' which is the most upsetting film I've ever seen, all about the children of the 'disappeared'. I watched it 20 years ago and it still haunts me.
Pedro Almodovar I could do without.

ValancyRedfern · 16/03/2021 10:59

Oh and avoid the film 'Tesis' at all costs. I had to watch it as part of my degree and I'm still traumatised!

lemonsaretheonlyfruit · 17/03/2021 06:59

Some great recommendations on here thanks so much. We are immersed in money heist and really loving it.
