Help me name this black and white romance film

I saw this film one afternoon at home about 35 years ago. I think there were commercial breaks put in. It was black and white. It was a formulaic romance between a girl living in an English village and a very good looking Romany Gypsy whom her parents did not approve of. There was a scene in a country church where they sang 'All things Bright and Beautiful.' I can't remember much else except being about 11, I thought it was extremely romantic. I would love to find it and if anyone could help, it would be amazing. Thank you.

Are you sure it was in black and white?

Sky West and Crooked made in 1966 sort of fits your description, but her mother is a single parent.

The film I mentioned does seem to stay with people, if online reviews and reminiscences are anything to go by. Lots of people remember seeing it as a child and seemed to have loved it.

Thank you - I will have a look. I was certain it was black and white but will look this one up. The church scene will be the clincher. It"s the only bit I remember in any detail.

The church and the vicar features quite heavily I think, so a scene singing a hymn may be possible. Without watching the film it's hard to tell.

I can confirm that they sing All Creatures Great and Small. Looks like this is your film.

Just to add it might have been in colour but you were watching it on a black and white television. Remember those? 👀

I did wonder that too. We had a black and white tv when we first got married, 37 years ago. I did think we probably had the last one ever made, but I imagine there were a few knocking around then.

It's on youtube op, if you want to have a look. I think you can buy the DVD on Amazon for £5.92.

Oh my goodness, I have just skimmed it on YouTube. You are absolutely right. Also re colour/black and white - we didn't get our colour TV until Charles and Diana"s wedding. My parents bought it specially for that! So I would have seen it before 1981, way younger than I thought I had been when I saw it. This is so cool! I hadn"t even considered the fact we had a black and white telly. What a Wally! Thank you so much, you've made my day!

Happy to help. I enjoy playing online detective and it wasn't that difficult once you ignore the black and white bit.

I had a tv film that I watched back in the 80's and it always stayed with me, but couldn't remember the name of it. A couple of years later if was on again and I set the video player because we were out and it didn't record. I've been looking for it ever since and finally found it in 2017 by googling the description. Turned out that there was a bit of a cult following for the film with people like me trying to find it. The film was called Sole Survivor and I now have a dvd of it.

I had the same thing happen with a book I had loved. I looked for over 20 years and decide to out the plot into Google one day. Turned out to be Touch Not The Cat by Mary Stewart. The internet is a wonderful thing.

Hayley Mills and Ian McShane (as the gypsy) starred in Sky West & Crooked. Top useless fact of the day: it was Ian McShane's voice at the beginning of Grace Jones' "Slave to the Rhythm" single.
