The Autopsy Of Jane Doe is good I think and merges a few elements very well eg jump scare, atmosphere, gore and that thing that some horrors do of constructing a weird reality that looks like regular life but isn't, quite.

@BoneAppleTeaa ummm, yeah maybe it is, I can’t really remember. I think you have to watch past all the cult ritualistic stuff and then you get to the actual premise of the film. I think when the brothers go separate ways is when it all kicks off.

I saw Hereditary twice, and while I found it unsettling the first time round, I read it completely differently the second time. As in, my interpretation of what was going on was very different from my first viewing.
I liked The Endless too, for sheer weirdness. It is a bit of a slow burn though.
I found The Borderlands terrifying, the end in particular.

It follows
Halloween (original)
Saint Maud

I liked the Babadook but I thought it was more sad than frightening

JovialNickname · 01/12/2020 15:35

I love It Follows too OP, and I also liked (if you have Netflix) Hush, I See You (that one is particularly great) and Creep (not the one about the underground, the one where the video maker goes to a random person's house).

Babadook
Insidious

ShipshapeShore · 01/12/2020 15:49

Insidious is the best creepy film I've seen in recent times. The second one is quite good too.

6 days left to watch the Hounds of Love on Channel 4

It is possiblythe most terrifying film I have ever watched.

It is not really a horror film but it is horrific.

It is based on a true crime torture and killing spree of a killer couple.

I couldn't not watch, even though some of the scenes resonated with things I have experienced, partly because of the incredible acting, script, pace and cinematography.

Both the film and the true crime on which it is based have pshcological elements that are of interst to me.

Basically the themes that interst me are of abusive cult leaders and psychopaths who manage to attract disturbed, vulnerable females into their orbit and then use the female and the couple relationship to seduce / recruit / kidnapp other women and girls.

It is also about how some women can become horrifically abusive themselves.

The film is shot with great artistry and manages to get inside both the heads of the perpetrators and the victims. The settings of the most horrific scenes are shot from an empty, domestic setting using a long corridor with glimpses into the room where the terrible things happen.

In a strange way this creates, very effectively, a visual creation of the dissociative states people enter following extreme trauma, where the terrible events are perceived as happening somewhere only partially visible, while mundane life goes on as normal all around.

This is definitely not a film for eveyone. If you are tramatised by scenes of sexual violence this is not for you.

If you enjoy well crafted terrifying perspectives into the depths that human beings can sink, and also the tenacity and bravery of the human spirit, then this film might be for you.

The moral of the film seem to be "always listen to you your mum as she has your best interests at heart", "be careful of noce young couples offereing drinks and drugs" oh, and "don't accept lifts from strangers".

I wish I had seen this film as an older teen. It might have helped me to make some better decisions in my life and avoid some real life problems.

trailer here

Even the trailer is not for everyone

This is not just a nasty sexploitation film. It has many redeeming qualities. It engages you at an emotional level and is really a very terrifying exploration of a dysfunctional, predatory, psychopathic relationship and also of the power of motherly love.

Lights out
Haunting of hill house (it’s a series but very very scary)
Creep

My OH refuses to watch the grudge 🤣 he saw a snippet of it when he was a young boy and since then hasn’t laid eyes on it lol.

Thespidersweb · 19/12/2020 09:36

Oooh watching

emmalynn · 26/01/2021 15:31

Sinister and Sinister 2 are the scariest films I have seen along with The Strangers
