What films would you personally recommend to watch at this time and why?

I'd suggest
Passengers (Jennifer Lawrence, Chris Pratt)
Why: because it's easy watching, looks pretty and without giving away the whole premise, their situation is pretty dire. You can watch it and think 'well this situation here should end at some point in future'.

Rosemary's Baby
Why: because it's genuinely frightening, a good film and the scare factor will distract you from worrying about Covid 19.

I think good horror films might be a general class worth looking at for the absorbtion and distraction factor.

We watched Spy the other night, it was good to laugh.

Terralee · 21/03/2020 12:39

Downfall - about the end of the Nazi regime haha

dorisrainbow · 21/03/2020 13:05

Outbreak

OhMyGodTheyKilledKenny · 21/03/2020 13:08

Hot Fuzz - because it's a classic British comedy and has some great one-liners that will be repeated time and time again. Yarp.

HooverVacuum · 21/03/2020 13:33

If you've recommended a contagion type film, please say why you've recommended it as being good to watch now - eg uplifting/positive ending? a good film in itself (Rather than just subject matter)?

Passengers has been widely criticised for it's Robinson Crusoe vibe: He's alone. He needs company, so he revives her, condemns her to spend the rest of her life with him rather than make a new start on a new world. Because he was lonely. The selfish fuck.

Anyways, what you like is what you like. My taste might not be yours. But I have recently greatly appreciated Thelma, sort of Scandi-Carrie, and Thoroughbreds, wickedly funny and dark story about poor little rich girls.

Passengers is one of my favourite films. It’s a pretty looking film with a conclusion.

Films are subjective anyway.

I rented The Invisible Man 2020. Found it to be an enjoyable horror/thriller. Good direction. Fairly decent acting, as long as you can take Elisabeth Moss making all the crazy faces that she makes in The Handmaids Tale.

We recently watched the Unbreakable trilogy

So Unbreakable
Split
Glass

As a trilogy very enjoyable. Unbreakable from 1999 is a bit more of a slow burn.
Spilt is an enigma whilst working out what is going on, but really interesting. And McAvoy really is a bit of a tour de force.
Glass, well. I love Samuel L Jackson. He doesn’t appear til a little bit into the film but really ties it together. So if you wanted something over a couple of nights, this would be a good recommendation from me

Zombies, Dawn of the Dead (George Romero), All about the breakdown of society.

superoz · 25/03/2020 23:37

If you’re going to watch Hot Fuzz then might as well make it a double bill with Shaun Of the Dead.

Suppose you could also watch At Worlds End, but let’s be honest - it’s not the best.

Bad Times at El Royale (18+)
Now available on DVD. Great cast. John Hamm, Chris Hemsworth, Jeff Bridges. Great plot. Fantastic female singer.
I was glued to cinema screen.

If you want a laugh, my all time favourite madcap caper "Some like it hot" . Jack Lemmon being chased by Osgood, Love it.

The dark knight trilogy because they are great films and quite long so at least even if you don't like them they'll kill a bit of time!
The Shawshank Redemption- always uplifting.

FthisS · 22/04/2020 17:28

Safety not guaranteed. The best film ever!

I really enjoyed this too. NOT what I expected at all. As a rule of thumb, I am skeptical of films with a very short run time but this was funny and touching. And a little magic
