The new Tom Hanks Film. Has anyone else seen it yet as I would love to know what others think?

Maybe if I had grown up watching Mr Rogers I would feel differently but quite honestly it made me feel quite uncomfortable. I can’t criticise the premise and the message it gave but it was very slow and cringey at times. It did improve as time went on but if it was on tv I think I would have given up.

I love Tom Hanks but didn't enjoy this film. When I watched the trailer I thought it would be about Mr Rogers not being as nice as he seemed instead it was about the journalist and his relation with his Dad.

I’m another huge Tom Hanks fan, but didn’t enjoy this as much as I thought I would. I enjoyed the storyline, but... I can’t quite put my finger on it, but it definitely had an undertone, at least for me. Similar to OP I think maybe if I was more familiar with the background it would be different. Such a shame!

Just saw this a couple of hours ago. Went with my sister, who also felt that if we'd grown up in US knowing who Mr Rogers was, it might have meant a bit more. However, I am not sorry I went to see it and I would now like to read the magazine article that inspired it. I thought it was quite moving at times and I do think it makes you think more about being kind to those around you (and yourself) and looking for the best in them.

I really want to see this

Gone2far · 05/02/2020 18:27

I'd also recommend 'Won't you be my Neighbour?', as recent documentary on Mr Rogers. It's on Netflix.

Gone2far · 05/02/2020 22:31

I've just been to see it...I enjoyed it, but prefer the documentary I mentioned above, as I didn't enjoy the sections on Lloyd Vogel, as much as those touching on Mr Rogers.
Fred Roger's wife appears as an extra in the scene in the Vietnamese restaurant.

Just got back - we all really enjoyed it (Dh and 17 y/o DS)

I just read the article - it’s very long and drawn out - didn’t think much of it at all

CormoranStrike · 08/02/2020 14:56

I didn’t enjoy it at all - Mr Rogers was perhaps lovely and endearing but I felt this was cringey and evening a bit creepy.

I grew up partly in the US and loved Mr Rogers, but the trailer for this film put me off. Hard to put my finger on why. Hanks looked like he was doing an impersonation, I think, if that makes sense - more than inhabiting a character? I don’t know if that makes sense.

I’d like to watch the documentary, though.

Gone2far · 08/02/2020 16:28

Sorry to bang on, but the documentary is much better. I enjoyed the film, but resented the amount of time spent on the journalists 'story'?

twosoups1972 · 09/02/2020 22:07

We saw it today.

I was disappointed tbh after the rave reviews. It was slow and dragged along.

MaxPaddyandHarry · 15/02/2020 15:00

We saw it yesterday and really enjoyed it. Will try to watch the documentary too.

MaxPaddyandHarry · 15/02/2020 17:37

Gonetoofar thank you. I have just watched the documentary. It was really good.
I don't think the film was really about the journalist. It was an illustration of how Mr Rogers influenced people, or worked his magic, if you like.
