Anyone seen this? I only just caught up with it after it's been on for months (at admittedly niche cinemas, though its retention for such a long time shows how popular it is)

Funny, suspenseful, near-tragic and dramatic. Amazing. I didn't look at my watch once in nearly two and a quarter hours.

This is the second Korean film I've ever watched, the other was "Snowpiercer" and as I've just discovered, by the same director, Bong Joon-Ho. Both films fabulous, couldn't be more different.

I'm definitely going back to see it again.

I’ve just found your thread after doing a search to see if anyone else has sent this.

Omg, @echt, wasn’t it brilliant? Funny, sad, great ending. I thought the actors were tremendous. I’d forgotten I was watching subtitles after about five minutes. One of the best films I’ve see.

MsAmerica · 04/02/2020 02:32

I saw it, and couldn't quite understand the fuss. It's intermittently amusing, and I admire the way the filmmakers were brave enough for those two major switches of tone - to tragic, and to surreal. But I thought it was superficial and not really award-caliber. Reminded me of "Shoplifters."

I haven't seen many Korean films, either, but I liked "A Taxi Driver."

It's done fantastically well at the Oscars, and much-deserved. It's great to see a foreign language film get Best Film, and hopefully will introduce a lot of people to new films and dramas.

KittyMcKitty · 10/02/2020 17:36

I loved it - beautifully shot and acted. The social commentary was hard hitting- as much what wasn’t said as was. So thrilled it triumphed at the Oscars.

NurseButtercup · 10/02/2020 21:46

It's a brilliant film. The storytelling, the cinematography, the music. Films like this are the reason I go to the cinema.

OneToThree · 12/02/2020 10:39

Going to see this Friday and really looking forward to it. I’ll report back.

eyesbiggerthanstomach · 12/02/2020 13:29

I plan on booking to see it next week. It is a daytime showing and I’m going alone. Chances are the cinema will be empty. I don’t like films that are scary or overly gory. I’m not sure what category this falls in?

Babymamamama · 12/02/2020 19:59

I was looking forward to this having previously loved two other Asian films: Shoplifters and The Farewell (both wonderful memorable films in their own way). Sadly this one didn't match up. It started great and I loved the idea of the individual characters taking their places within the family... however I wasn't ready if the shift into a Tarantino - esque section half way through. I felt the director just lost his way from that point onward. I found the more incredible/unbelievable the story line became the more detatched I felt from it. Gutted as I love love love foreign films generally. Very interesting to see insights into Korean culture nevertheless.

Panicmode1 · 13/02/2020 06:17

I went yesterday, and thought it was brilliant. I did find that you had to suspend your disbelief in parts, but it was one of the most original films I have seen in a long while.

Beigeisthenewblack · 13/02/2020 08:32

Chances are the cinema will be empty.

I went last night. I bumped into a friend who’d tried to go the night before but it was sold out. It had also been moved to a bigger screen since I booked my tickets on Monday, when

Snowpiercer was utterly dreadful. Now I know that Parasite is similar I probably won’t bother watching it.

SW16 · 13/02/2020 08:43

Brilliant film!

Great characters and ‘human’ scale while tackling huge metaphorical themes and satire.

Some breathtaking visual scenes.

My eldest teen loved it too.

Voila212 · 13/02/2020 08:55

To be honest I was dreading going to see it over the subtitles but my teen son really wanted to see it as his a real film buff. None of his friends would have been into it so off i went. I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it, just when I thought it was dragging it ramped up. I found the time flew and I didn't notice the subtitles after a while. We went on Sun before the Oscars and I was shocked about how packed the cinema was.

Feelingfestivenow · 13/02/2020 09:15

Saw it a while back told loads of people to go and see it as I really enjoyed it, so far no-one has done!

It was good but the directors other films are well worth watching, but then so are many Japanese films as well.

But I do think given the fuss of lack of diversity at the Oscars this year it may have won for other reasons.

bettys · 13/02/2020 09:56

I wouldn’t say Parasite is similar, I didn’t like Snowpiercer either but thought Parasite was much more back to the Korean style of filmmaking than the international mishmash of Snowpiercer.

OneToThree · 15/02/2020 13:23

We loved it, brilliant film.

SmellMySmellbow · 15/02/2020 13:26

Incredible film. In fact, I think it's my favourite I've ever seen. Really never seen anything like it, it had everything and took me on such a journey in a few hours.

longhaulstress · 15/02/2020 16:00

Saw it yesterday and thought it was brilliant.
Can't say much more about it without giving spoilers away.
For anyone who is interested IMDB has a really great analysis of the film from one users point of view- (it's the top rated user review).

cymrukernow · 15/02/2020 23:51

It's such a great film. It starts off as a very interesting and humorous situation - you're thinking where will this lead? Then the story takes a surprising and dark twist. I was hooked, although the suspense at times was unbearable. The storytelling was brilliant, reminded me of Almoldovar films, if not quite as wacky.

Dontwanttobeyourmonkeywench · 16/02/2020 00:53

Went to see this today and really enjoyed it. I like the subtlety in the interactions where what is implied is as important as what is said, but I also enjoyed films like Shoplifters and the Farewell. I like films where nuance is left to the audience, so I'm not sure about the rumoured HBO remake.

stellabelle · 16/02/2020 00:57

I saw it last week, and enjoyed it, but I wouldn't have given it a "best picture" award. Maybe I missed something.

ThisIsBigMoon · 17/02/2020 13:03

We took our teen DDs to see it yesterday. The cinema was sold out. The DDs absolutely loved it. We loved the dark humour, and the gentle portrayals of the two families. It was so beautifully shot. Plus, I really, really want that house.

Fere · 17/02/2020 13:06

which film do you think should have been given those awards instead @stellabelle

boatyardblues · 17/02/2020 13:42

It was so beautifully shot. Plus, I really, really want that house.

Me too. I particularly liked the view of the garden and the poodle-cut topiaried trees from the sofa angle.

I also loved the dark humour, but in amongst it the love the two families showed for each other. The wild boy’s astute observations and the fact they are roundly ignored was also a great touch. There were aspects of it that reminded me of Wes Anderson’s films.

fishonabicycle · 17/02/2020 14:50

Snowpiercer was bloody awful!
